I have a 6x6x36 piece of very well-seasoned purpleheart. What opinion so you have for cutting it up? Shaft blanks, butt pieces? Point stock? Anything?

I would leave it as is until you are ready to use it. If it's well seasoned it won't matter what you cut it into, butt size 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 36" or shaft squares.

Just cut it up for what you think you will use it for. Some shaft and butt squares would be easy to get out of it.

Shaftwood needs to have straight grain, if the grain does not stay straight for 30", no shaftwood.

Decide now and cut, it will need to sit for a while after cutting to relieve the stress no matter how long it's been seasoned. I recently cut some Purpleheart that I had sitting in 8/4 form, sat for five years, I could see small movement while cutting. Relieve the stress and let it sit.

I have to go along with Mike. If you are opening a 6"X6" chunk of wood I would give it a chance to acclimate to the new environment. Purple heart is a particularly stable wood and will probably be fine but do give it a chance to move, or not.
