Pushing whitey vs. Hitting whitey

How would you explain to a player that is "pushing" whitey through their stroke to "Hit" the cueball?

I hope someone understands what I am asking.

It sounds like you are talking about hitting the cue ball twice by pushing the cue stick through the shot when the cue ball is close to the object ball? The way I demonstrate this is to show them how the cue ball follows the object ball on a full hit with a center hit on the cue ball, then show them how when the shot is hit correctly, all of the energy transfers to the object ball and the cue ball stops at the moment of contact. If you are talking about slow stroking every shot (basically placing the tip on the cue ball and pushing it with the cue tip staying in contact for longer than a correct hit), I would place the cue ball an inch or so from the rail and have them shoot directly into the rail, making the cue ball come back straight off the rail and hit the opposite rail. They won't be able to do this without jamming the stick and ball into the rail or having the ball come back and hit their tip. Hope this helps. Basically you want to make them understand that it's more like hitting the ball with a bat than like shuffleboard where you guide the puck where you want it to go.

It's my understanding, and correct me here, that a push shot is not an illegal shot.

I didnt make myself clear. It seems that he is not accelerating his stroke prior to impact. It seems like he is timid to make contact and then accelerates after impact to give the impression he is really following through. I knew this would be hard to explain. He is not making an illeagal shot at all. it just looks odd and he has trouble getting any action on whitey.

Typically in all the tournaments I've played push shots are illegal. You are only allowed to stroke through frozen balls at at least a 45 degree angle. So you can't even stroke straight through a frozen ball with english to throw the object ball, let alone push them in any way.

Basically your saying he is putting the cue tip on the ball and then pushing it but in one motion, right?

Either way just tell him to stroke the cue from start to finish in one fluid motion. Don't try to hit the cue ball just stroke the cue.

I sounds like he has what I called 'scared stroke'...he doesn't stroke clean through the CB and thusly gets no action on the CB....have him practice some drills that use draw and some with follow....setup a target area to move the CB to and see how he does....

I try to show my wife how to stroke the ball, and she says, "Oh, you mean you want me to POP it"?
