Question about a JET mill

The same retired machinist that sold me my new/old atlas-craftsman 101.07403 lathe, has a JET vertical/horizontal mill. the model number is
JVHM-724 He said it works great and has lots of stuff for it, but I can't find ANYTHING on the web about it. not even the model number listed (which i took directly off the machine). Looks to be maybe 20 years old maybe more. the serial number was 94. I don't know what he's gonna ask yet, he said he would give me a good deal. He also has a nice Bridgeport J-head, but its not for sale......yet! I just didn't know what I would be getting into, but it looks pretty solid! anyone seen, heard, or worked with this mill?

Seem to remember it

I seem to remember it being in the catalog in the late nineties if it is a fairly light unit, a vertical mill plus a horizontal spindle. coming out of the upright portion of the machine. Hard to describe it but I am not talking about a vertical mill with horizontal attachment.

This took standard collets if I remember correctly although the horizontal and vertical quills may take different collets. My memory of the machine isn't the best. Any metal mill is a great machine for some of the work needed to make short or long splices and a horizontal mill would be the bee's knees in my opinion. I lusted after a horizontal mill with vertical attachment a few years ago but the fact it was halfway across the country along with the weight and footprint discouraged me. 12,000 pounds is a bit heavy for cue equipment even for me although I do like metal machinery to work on.

The standard Jet J head knock off metal mill is a little flimsy for job shop work but very stiff for cue work, I think the one you are looking at would be fine. I absolutely loved my Bridgeport J-head from the seventies and if the guy ever parts with his at a price that is fair, grab it even if you don't think you need it. Selling mine during a move was one of my dumber missteps.

Sorry for a lack of real information about the machine, I looked at it pretty hard when it was new but didn't buy. I don't think many were sold here in the US.

thanks for the info. do you think it will be hard to find parts if I need them?
what would be a reasonable price for something like this? Can you suggest a resource for finding out more info on the mill?

I think these folks are Jet or at least Jet is a brand name they use. Contact them for parts availability.

I think most of the parts would be readily available for the machine. The ones that tend to wear out would be pretty standard I believe. A fair price is tricky. I don't remember what it sold for new but my feeling is that I wouldn't pay much of a premium if any over the price of a similar Jet vertical mill. These seem to be discontinued because they didn't sell well. That indicates that resale value will be low if you ever go to sell it. I seem to remember that the horizontal quill uses a different series collet that is pretty pricey but readily available however I may be wrong. Doesn't really matter if a set comes with the machine.

I looked at it again it's a JVHM-728 not 724... If this helps anyone tell me more about it I really appreciate it

If it seems in an ok condition and a good price, you should be OK.
Some of those mills has R8 for the verical and 30 international for the horzontal. Although there were some that used the german deckel tapers in both the vert and horiz spindles. Too hard to tell from those pics.
