Question about a table???

I have just seen an advertisement in a local paper of a Gandy 9 ft table for sale. The only problem is that 1 of the 3 slate pieces is broken. I know very little about table construction. Is it possible to replace just the broken slate or would all three pieces need to be replaced and what would the approximate cost be. The seller only wants $200 for the table.

In most cases, slates come in matched sets, meaning all 3 pieces have been machined to a finish at the same time. In the case of your slates, having one broken, means that for someone to sell you "1" piece of slate...if it's in a set, it's going to leave them 2 slates left over, which becomes worthless to them...so the price of buying just one piece of slate is going to cost you the same as if you bought all 3 pieces at once. Next, if you were able to find just the slate you need to replace the broken one, it's not going to match up with the other 2 slates BUT...if you have a very good technician in mind...it can be done...perfectly I might add, but...like I said, it depends on who's doing the work. The final thing you have to know, is that the bolt holes to mount the rails may not line up on the one piece of replacement slate, the pocket cut may be different, as well as the backing on the slate may be thicker or thinner. Even if you were to purchase all 3 slates, you still have to know that they've been drilled to fit the Gandy rail bolt holes...or you have to know how to drill out new bolt holes to fit the rails to the slate.

What area do you live in?

Gandy shut down but emerged as American Heirloom near Atlanta.
They may have some Gandy slate that will work. Doesn't hurt to give
them a call - 770-480-2935

Try Imperial also

You can also try Imperial Billiards in NJ or a dealer that buys from them. They import a LOT of slate from Brazil and do sell patterns for other tables plus one piece slates in 8, 9 and 10 foot sizes.

Sorry, don't mean to correct you, but Diamond is the only manufacture that has one piece over-sized slates made for pool tables. I'm not talking about the undersized one piece slates made for coin-op pool tables, I'm referring to over-sized slates, the same size as a 3 piece slate, but not cut into 3rds. Diamond is the ONLY importer of the over-sized one piece 9ft slate, and there is NO such thing as a one piece 10ft slate.

Call Heritage Amusement in Athens. They used to have all the tables from UGA. The tables were all Gandy's big G's. There is the possibility that they have some slates they would like to sell. 706-353-7547 ask for Robert.
