Question about Butt of cue.......

I posted this in another forum but didnt get any response so I posted it here. Hope thats OK. I have been looking for a nice sneaky recently but wanted to ask A question before I purchase something. How much emphasis should be put on the butt end of a cue regarding difference of playibility? Isn't the shaft the main component? How much of a factor is the butt in performance and feel. Does it make more sense to find the right shaft and put it on any decent butt to save some money? Or does it really make a difference? Say a butt from an Action or Players sneaky with a good quality LD shaft. Will this combo work as well as a higher priced cue?

Yes, the butt does factor in to the over all package. For instance, the balance of the cue will change from butt to butt, the thickness of the butt may be thinner or thicker, the joint diameter of the shaft may or may not be the same as the joint diameter of the butt causing and over hang or under hang. There are a lot of factors to consider here.

The shaft is the most important piece of wood in the cue as far as playability is concerned. Some shafts feel better on some butts than others though. This is due in part how the butt is built and how the vibrations transfer from the shaft, through the wood, and, to your hand.

Higher end shafts seldom feel the same on lower end builds than they do on the cue they were built to match. I do think that if you stay with a quality produce for both the shaft and butt, you are way a head of the game. Just my .02.....
 
Butt makes a difference in the hit, but I started with inexpensive butt with LD shaft. When you just starting you would not feel a difference much so I would suggest do that and maybe in a year or so buy yourself custom butt for that shaft

Thanks for the input but I am not just starting so I will definently feel and know the difference. Been playing most of my life but just curious about what will work on a smaller budget!

Buy a nice sneaky from a reputable builder. By it new or unaltered, and make any adjustment you want as you fine tune it. Every component of a cue is important. A shaft is great, but it needs to give you the correcr feedback from the butt through your arm.

A nice sneaky is only going to set you back $300-500....new. if you play a lot of pool, it is cheap money for your investment....I am talking custom sneakies. Also, with a quality custom sneaky, value wont depreciate much, so you will be ok when you upgrade again.

If possible, ask buddies to let you hit with their cue so you will know how different cues feel. Be alert to alterations...a cue built by a good maker with a 13mm shaft that a player had turned down to 11.5mm byhis cueman, Yo Buddy, is not indicative of how the original cue would have played.

Comfort and confidence in repitition of shot results are what is important. Best of luck to you in your hunt.
