Can some one help me with some instructions on applying clear coat to a set of joint protectors. I am using the min wax poly and I am still getting crappy results. I apply clear to a diamond wood set that is clear of any waxes oils and dust apply poly wait 4 hours sand with 400 apply again, I did this 4 times and still the top coat is grainy and just not perfect. I am applying with a foam brush.

I would wait 24 hrs to sand. I use minwax alot myself and after much trial and error, I have found that if you would let it dry completely, sanding is much easier. It will polish to a very high luster. I have used both the oil and the water based. The water based works best in my opinion. Hope this helps you out.

I think J/P's are a big pain in the ass. I seal them with epoxy by rubbing it hard into the JP to fill the grain etc. Sand it smooth and put on 2 to 3 light coats of spray.... minwax poly or urethane. Wait 24 hours and sand it smooth. Put on 2 to 3 more coats and wait another 24 hours.

Wet sand it with 600 then 1000. Buff it like it was a cue. It comes out great.

For Playing cues, I use Diamond Wood and sand them up to 2500 in steps, then wax and buff.

If you are building diamond wood cues just sand them down and buff. No need for a finish. But if you think 4 wipe on coats of any easy one part finish is going to do the job, you have vastly underestimated the difficulty of getting a deep mirror finish.
