Question about cue cases

My cue case fell apart, it was a shmelke that came with the purchase of a pool cue I bought ten years ago. I was looking at tube cases and was wondering if they are ok to use with a carom cue?

I was talking to my pool playing friend and he said had a case where the tubes were made to fit his shaft. I am not sure if he was shitting me though.

Thanks

If you leave a rubber grip on a carom cue then you want a case which will not hang the cue up. I used to make cases for carom players in Germany and I used 50mm tubes to accomodate the rubber grips.

You can buy any number of hard cases with fabric or kind of a satin liner that should be suitable for your carom cue. The only other thing is that generally the carom cues will have a short butt with no pin, about 28" and the shaft will be about 30" including the pin. So this disparity often results in butts going too far into the tube case to be retreived easily and sometimes shafts being too long.

So you need to check these two things if considering a tube case.

We can custom make a case for you that will fit your cues but our wait exceeds three months on custom cases at the moment.

There is an excellent list of other case makers that I reccommend at www.jbcases.com at the bottom of the page.

John was talking about the typical carom cue with a wood screw extending from the shaft. However, if your carom cue is a Schuler, you will have a short shaft which is just a little fatter at the joint than the typical shaft. This can also lead to problems with some cue cases.

I once had a Jim Knott case where the plastic tubes were too narrow for the fatter Schuler shafts. Since then I've always discussed this with the casemaker before buying a case.

I now have a Justis Prolite 2x4 case. His Prolite cases don't have plastic tubes but use some sort of tough fabric. His shaft tubes are big enough in diameter, but my shafts, being short, can fall way down into the fabric tubes where my fingers can't get a grip. When this happens I have to take out the butt, turn it upside down, insert it into the shaft tube and partially screw it into the shaft so I can lift the shaft out. For this reason I can't use joint protectors on the shafts - no big loss. Violent shaking might also work - I'm not sure, but I don't want to rely on it. Jack told me that spacers in the tubes won't help because the tubes don't go all the way to the bottom of the case. Apart from this issue, I really like the Justis case and it's the case I use. Great craftsmanship.

So I don't think your buddy was kidding you. You will have no problem with an old-fashioned 1x2 case like a Fellini. They have soft fabric dividers and plenty of room. Also no problem with a soft-sided case. You can find lots of inexpensive vinyl soft cases. But if you want a high-end case with tubes, be sure to measure your butt and shafts - length and diameter - and discuss the fit with the case company before you order.

I suggest maybe a Silver Fox semi-hard case. Lots of room and lots of pocket space.

Any of the cases listed here would probably serve you well.

John, when will your new Sterling wave cases come out in the market? :)

They will be available towards the end of December. I'd recommend checking with a local or online dealer as well as the sales department at Sterling has been pushing to get most of this shipment pre-sold.

John,
As one of the winners of the Sterling Wave cases in your recent contest, I find your website pictures and descriptions of the Wave to be quite the teasers. I'm really looking forward to test-driving your new interior design. Knowing your dedication to cue protection, these ought to be the nuts in their price class. Can't wait for the delivery truck! Thanks again!
