question about table lighting

Hello. I'm getting ready to get a 7' (39"x78" playing surface) table in my basement and have a question about lighting. My basement ceilings are 84" high and I'm going to mount a 48" fluorescent light fixture on the ceiling. The fixture is about 4" thick so essentially I'm mounting four 48" 32W bulbs about 50" above the table surface.

Does that sound about right? I'm not sure about the wattage and the height.

Thanks for the advice.

That should be plenty of wattage as well as enough height. If you are mounting the light so the height is adjustable (like on chains) you should have no problem going lower if you need to.

EDIT: I just reread your post and notice you are mounting the light ON the ceiling rather than FROM it. If that's the case you might want to experiment with how wide a footprint the fixture will throw. It depends if you want only the playing surface lit or whatever. Obviously if you use a diffuser similar to the Diamond light, the dispersion will be more straight down and it won't throw light as far out.

after you get the light mounted you can put a cloth skirt around it.makes a nice look!

That Diamond light looks pretty nice but pricey. I'm a bit worried now that the light on the ceiling will cast a light too wide. Does this type of thing really make much difference? I'm wondering if I should look around for another light fixture that is specifically for a pool table.

Why not hang it? Then you can set it at any height you want.
