Question about traveling with cues.

My APA team won this session and now we are going to Las Vegas. I know you can't carry our cues on the plane, we have to check them. Is it better to pack your cues in with your luggage or should I ship them to the hotel prior to leaving.

Travelling with cues

It's funny, you can take a tennis racket on an airplane but not a pool cue, I could do more damage with a tennis racket anyday. I purchase a 3 x 5 Haliburton Zero case, flight approved to check the cues with the airline. If you have a flight approved case, the airline has to pay for any damage to the cues. Then I packed a nice soft case in my luggage to use during the tournament so I didn't have to take that big gaudy case into the casinos and poolrooms.

This travelling problem has actually affected the number of people that want to go to these tournaments, it's a real pain, and it's ridiculous, as most things are these days with travelling on the airlines

I think I could do more damage with a pool cue than a tennis racket any day. They aren't made of wood anymore, they weigh just about nothing. But I agree it's a pain to check the cues.

I've tried both ways, shipping them and checking them. Shipping is expensive and no more convenient. Just get a good travel bag and package it up as best you can.

You should check the maximum liability for your airline. Certain airlines pay by the pound for lost luggage, while others have a maximum amount for each "bag." Also, some offer insurance for a fee based on declared value.

Good luck in Vegas!

Golf Hard Travel Case

I Purchased A Hard Travel Case For Golf Clubs It Cost Me 50 Bucks I Wraped My Cases In A Towel, Put All My Shoes In There Also And It Was All Good.

A smaller case put inside your suitcase is probably the best way to go, these days. Your suitcase is less likely to be lost than a case with just your cues. I have heard of problems recently with shipping to the hotel, also.

I have 2 expensive custom cues and I won't take them on an airline, period. They've lost my luggage or damaged my luggage and when you go to file a complaint they act like you did something wrong. I have a sneaky pete cue that i'd take with me if I was traveling for pool and i'd use a large suitcase and put my cue in it wrapped in towels.

I can't understand why they won't let you take your cue case on a plane and put it in the overhead storage. I've done it many times prior to 9/11 and I never had a problem, but some committee that knows nothing about pool decided pool cues are bad so we have the present mess trying to travel with our cues.

Buttheads...

Those who decided that pool cues are banned as carry-ons should get a clue as to how many pool players travel and can no longer take their treasured, irreplaceable, often one of a kind pool cues with them, due to the ban. They could easily have a designated storage area at the front of the plane that could get locked once the plane is in flight and stay locked until arrival at the destination. Same thing could be done with the overhead storage, just make it lock while in the air, no way to take a cue out and become a weapon. Then we could all take our cues with us without worrying if they get damaged or stolen. Write your congressmen and senators.

This comes up a lot here,as mentioned....I remember thinking the the best thing was to ship it out with the proper insurance for the value. At least then worst case scenerio gives you back your money in em.

Never had to deal with it though...just my conclusion based on what I've read here...

fed ex it

Ive been 3 times and used fed ex everytime, it was very easy, smooth and you can insure it. We would pack up the whole team's in one box and reuse the box to ship back. Its a little bit of an expense (ours about $25 per person for both ways) but it offers the most piece of mind.

see, this subject worries me because I have a new cue coming soon and I already know I'll be taking it with me to Virginia for the US Open and I would die if anything happened to it. Its the most money I've ever spent on one thing, besides my car, and I don't want anything to happen to it. If mailing is the way to go I'd rather do that than risk warping or other damage that might occur on a flight.

not to mention where they store the luggage may not be pressurized so it could be subjected to extreme cold

Designated Travel Cue

i only use a predator when i travel :)

play with it a week before i am travelling so i get used to it, put it into that very sturdy predator case, put that in the spongy cue bag cover and just check it in -

i have done that 3 times and i will tell you guys this - checking it in does affect the cue - i can see the joint lines now - this probably is due to the pressure difference in the cargo hold ...

i would never travel with a high end custom cue.

anyway you cut it, you are ruining your cue !

just find a designated travel cue - something you know in the back of your mind you will have to replace after a given number of trips as they will eventually just get ripped apart !
