Question about veneers

I'm looking to have a cue made with veneers adjoining the points. Pardon my naivete, but I am assuming that the veneers are pieces of thin wood that are actually placed into grooves cut out beside the points. Please confirm.

Secondly, I realize I would have an option of either purchasing a blank and having a cuemaker complete the cue, or having a cuemaker complete one from start to finish. Any advantages to either option?
 
No, they are not placed into their own groove. The veneers are all glued together and then glued to the point wood. Then, they are all glued in to place together in a single process. Yes, I skipped some steps, but the point wood with veneers attached are installed together as a unit.
 
my advice to you is to just buy a cue you like
or from a cuemaker you like
let him take care of the details
