question about veneers

anyone have any idea why the black that prathers & constantines sells is thicker than all the other colored veneers???????
 
Hi Brent, I can't speak for Constantine (they don't make veneers) or Prather (they don't make black) but black is the hardest veneer color to make, by far, especially in euro sycamore or hard maple. In the USA black veneer is only commercially available in certain thicknesses and relatively softer and more porous woods. The thicknesses may not match the thicknesses of the colored veneer the vendor sells. At the present time, I make my .020 black only. I continue to work on perfecting .036 black. After about 2 years and at least 2.5K spent in development I am very close to being satisfied with the outcome. I hope that helps.

i just got black from constantines yesterday
and prathers also has it in black
the black is .035"
everything else is .030 or .040
jennifer at prathers told me they do make thier own veneers
not sure about constantines
 
Prather does not make their black veneer. I didn't say they didn't dye other color veneers. Jeff Prather told me they tried to make black in the poplar they use and it was too much trouble. All Constantines makes is a call to their supplier!
