Question: cell phone usage during play

Someone doing that to me is asking to have their phone broken in a few pieces. I can understand if a call comes in and you have to take it, but at least excuse yourself from the table and do it somewhere else. Not too many things chap my ass more than watching someone shooting with a cell phone wedged between their chin and shoulder. On more than one occasion I've told people playing with me, and at other tables, to take their conversation out of the playing area.

Depends on the situation, once in league play my opponent was a doctor who was on call and had to take a 30 min call.

Again, there are going to be situations where the person has to take the call and I highly doubt anyone will complain but the proper etiquette would be for that person to say "Hey, I gotta take this call, go ahead and shoot around until I get back." and then walk away from the table. Talking and continuing to play though is cause for a foot in the colon.

i have a friend of mine that is a school teacher that also plays pool. he bought a cell phone jammer (so his students will not be on the phone in class). it has a range of about 30ft. there is one guy at our poolroom that is notorious for talking on the phone while playing people and everyone hates it. my friend was playing him the other day and as soon as the guy started his phone antics, my friend flipped on the jammer...man it was hilarious. i thought he was gonna throw the phone up against the wall because it wouldnt hold a signal.

Here in Japan the kids are not allowed to have phones in class. The homeroom teachers collect all the phones first thing in the morning and lock them in the teachers room and don't give them back until the end of the day. I see nothing wrong with that rule.

The Charlotte Metro APA has a by-law to handle this:
c. If a player answers a cell phone during a game, whether it is their turn at the table or not, it is considered a
time out. If the player has already had their maximum timeouts, it will be considered a loss of game.

I like it :)

How would you feel if your opponent carried on a phone conversation for at least 30-45 minutes during play? This happened to me recently. It was not a match, gambling or a tournament. We were just practicing 9-ball one Friday night.

This bothered me. I felt he was being disrespectful. Some of you may say, "Well, who cares?" If it hurts his game all the better for you.

I can see that point. But I am one of those who feels if he is playing someone that person should devote his full attention to the play at hand, practice or not.

To be honest, this person was very soft-spoken and I could barely hear his conversation (which is unusual for most cell-phone users), but the fact that he was doing this during play irritated me a little. I won't be asking him to play anytime soon because of it, even though he is a nice guy.

Guess I'm too picky.

One could also argue that I should have been focusing harder on my game instead of letting this play with my head. But where is the line for your opponent to respect the fact he is playing someone else?

It's 2009...got a whole new list of gripes...:)

When someone I play is on their cell, especially if I'm gambling, and it's my turn at the table, I pause everything I'm doing, and just stare at him  with this "Come on man! WTF!?" look on my face.

It works every time, cause ya know, when that happens, they can just :kma:

I just turn mine off. Came to play not talk. If wife needs me she knows the number of the room. And long before cell phones, if she called the room I was always there 'cause she only called if it was important and couldn't wait until I was on my way home.

I find it very rude to carry on a conversation. When Im on call, I will let the person know before we play that I may need to take a phone call or maybe even leave during our play. usually they are fine with it. I think its okay to answer the phone and maybe tell the person youll call them back or just to see if its an emergency or whatever but to carry on a conversation is total disrespect.

One guy at my local pool hall did this one day, and on top of that kept looking at me laughing talking in another language on his bluetooth headset. I kept telling him he was being rude and when I finally walked away from the table he got off the phone. He took the hint I guess. I told the bartender/owner/friend what happened and pointed to my ear to describe the bluetooth thing, and right when I did that the guy I was playing runs over to accuse me of insulting his turban(which I wasnt, nor have I have insulted someone for that or any other racial/religious issues). Sorry for rambling on, but just focus on the game and stay of the phone!

I dont like the use of any of the electronics people carry with them into the pool room. If you cant go and play a couple of games without having to talk for a half hour then maybe should not get in the game. If you are going to take up another persons time that way, then you should be ready to pay for the other persons table time. Turn the cell phone off, be courteous to other players. Another gripe that I have is lately there are some younger players that will have in earphones listening to i-pods through whole matches and in tournament play. Again this is rude and disrepectful to the other player.

To the OP, I agree completely.....taking a quick 5 minute call happens....you excuse yourself, get away from play, and take care of business.....if it's a 45 minute call, he should have excused himself from the game entirely and said something along the lines of, "I've gotta take this, you may want to play with someone else or just practice"

Granted, I really think once it had gone on a couple of games, you should have told him that you would play by yourself and would be happy to play when he was done with his call.....

Regardless, I agree with your stance....long phone calls are something you take when you are alone....not playing pool, on the golf course, at the dinner table, nor hanging with friends......unless it is an emergency, it's just rude...granted, that is just my two cents.....

Just remembered something funny. A few years ago I was shooting around in the AZ room at DCC and Tony Crosby walks in and wants to shoot around. While playing he takes a phone call and proceeds to handily whoop my ass while talking on the phone the whole time. All I could think was lucky for me I don't have his full attention or I wouldn't have made it to the table those two times:eek:
