If you think you have better control of the cue ball, you think you can handle the traffic problems of spread balls better. Hence the disrespect for your opponent.
But top pros want to keep their opponent at a disadvantage - long shots, cue ball on the cushion, snookered - so they need clear paths. Most break on the corner ball. I've heard Steve Davis recommend the second ball.
The snooker forum thread mentions breaking on the third ball. When I try this, it is a crap shoot as to whether I can bring the cue ball back. But I have no talent for this frustrating game.:frown::frown::frown:
