question for schon owners

I just got a schon, and everybody was right about the stiff hit. However, I'm shooting better with a 314 shaft I already had instead of the stock shaft. I don't think it has anything to do with deflection, I think it's because the 314 is a thinner diameter.

Two questions:

1) Will a thinner diameter schon shaft still have the stiff hit?

2) Would I be better having my current shaft turned down or should I just buy a new one, and where is a good place to get a schon shaft?

The reason I post this here is because I'm sure others have gone through this before.

Thanks,
Al-St Louis

I've owned 2 Schons and can say with confidence that it will still deliver a nice, firm hit. I know EBay constantly has Schon shafts on there but I'm not positive if it's the best place to buy. Try asking dooziexx(Erik) as he has some of the best Schon prices around.
One piece of advice if you go with a Schon shaft: replace the tip ASAP. You may like it but I hated them. Miscued like crazy.

Best of luck,
Koop

I play with a Schon and use the Schon shaft. An earlier Schon I had the shaft tapered and I also used at the time the scrub stuff. Needless to say the shaft shrunk in diameter quite a bit. Never again. I now use the stock Schon shaft and do nothing that might change the diameter.

So whether tapered or not , the Schon always delivers a solid hit.

Regarding the 314, it is not uncommon for players to play better with this shaft. Most of the reason is that the flex is more uniform which makes it more consistent shot after shot. If you like the 314, stay with it.

Can email Mr. Clarke at schon and ask him to make you a shaft. I purchased one from him and it was of equal cost of anywhere else I could find.

I had problems miscuing with my Schon tip at first too. But I use a Tip Pik after every time I play and make sure to use new chalk that isn't worn in. I find I don't miscue nearly as much now.

It definitely is a hard tip though...

Hi Al,

I'm glad you found yourself a nice Schon. Which one did you end up getting?

A lot of people think the Schon with 314 shaft is a good set-up. I like them set up that way.

I have quite a few older Schon shafts, taken down to as small as 11 mm. They retain the stiffness as long as the taper is the same. The wrong taper will ruin the shaft, so be careful who you use. I would go a little thicker than your Predator. Even though Predator is supposed to be 12.75, most really measure in at 12.5 and quickly wear down to 12mm.

My playing cue is a Schon with a 314 shaft. Can't imagine playing with anything else, it's a beautiful feel.

I can...I can imagine playing with a McDermott I.C.E. shaft, an Universal shaft, a Joss shaft, a custom shaft by a big name cuemaker, a Falcon shaft, and also even a Schon shaft.

Hey, I don't have to imagine...I DO put those shafts on it and play!!

I got a used stl 7, 19.5 oz in very good shape. The guy had two schons with 3 shafts and let me take my pick of the shafts, I got a good straight shaft, I'm guessing 13mm and he had a new le pro tip on it. When I was a kid I played on snooker tables exclusively and I guess that's why I like the smaller diameter, just feels right for some reason.

The schon shaft shoots good, I just seem to do a little better with the 314. If I have it turned down I will see if Jim Buss will do it, otherwise I'll just buy a new one from E C.

The people who talked about the solid hit of the schon didn't lie, it's the best cue I've played with.

Thanks,
Al-St Louis

That is the exact weight and model of one my old Schons. Beautiful playing cue and best of luck with it.
The one thing I did which I would never regret is replacing the tip with a Triangle and Mike Webb put one of those fiber pads on there. Loved it even more after that.

Why does the 314 shaft quickly wear down?

I had the threads changed on my 314 to fit my Schon and the 314 is much thinner than my Schon. I blame my cue guy for sanding it down when he changed tips. Is the wood that soft that it comes off so fast? But I do like my Schon shaft and have better success with it.
