Question regarding 8-Ball team play

Thank You very much.

I mentioned today that he spent at least as much time delaying the game by giving advice as some players do by having side-bar conversations and I think it hit home a little because he stayed in his seat a little more and let his partner do more shooting without so much unsolicited advice.

Who knows, there may be hope after all.

There is hope after all.

Today, he went 3 1/2 hours without so much as one "helpful" hint, or unsolicited piece of advice.

I think he's done offering advice without someone first having asked for it.

Yes!

Yes!

Maybe he's an AZB member and saw the thread.

Setting the rules up front is the only solution.

In the two senior centers I play at, when a regular doesn't show up, the new boy is advised of the group's "standard modifications" before the games start.

There are four of us older gentlemen that meet at the Senior Center each weekday morning to play "Alabama 8-Ball". My team mate and I have become concerned with our opponents continually helping each other when it's their inning.

One of the opponents inevitably will get out of his chair and stand at the pool table and advise his team mate of every shot to make. My team mate and I think this is unsportsmanlike.

Any thoughts and comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

Easy fix, set up rules for coaching. I play partners gambling for 10-20 a set with a friend of mine often, and the group we are in has no issues with coaching on every shot. But at times we do have a "no coaching" rule, or at least setup a one per game or even one per set consultation, this usually happens when one pair has an advantage or if the whole group is all stronger players to keep time spent waiting to shoot down. Most, if not all, leagues also setup coaching rules, some based on skill. In the 10 ball Master's USAPL league I play in, there is a one time out per SET rule, meaning in the 5-6-7 games you need to win, you have one time out. In some of the regular level leagues it's one per game, and I think the more casual league (the women's one) they may allow more than one a game.

So make up some coaching rules for your games, I don't see anyone complaining about it.

Hey if you're all friendly, just ask the helper if he wants to shoot for the shooter too, &/or ask the shooter if he needs any help or can he handle it.

Say it in a joking manner & the helper might get the message. Maybe you can suggest no help unless the shooter asks for it.

Whatever don't let it get you down or ruin the whole get together.

Best Wishes,
Rick

I am close friends with a couple who always play on the same team. They will talk about every shot if they can. I always try and change the rules. One or two timeouts per game.
