Questions about BCA new PRO venture

While I have never met or heard Mark Griffin (perhaps there's a youtube video of him speaking, if so, would someone please post it?) I have heard and spoken with Mike Janis at length on one occasion. Mike Janis has a very strong personality; he likes to be top dog, IMHO. Someone might call that a "Type A" personality.

What's Mark Griffin like? Is he the "top dog" type too?

If so, two "top dogs" may clash with each other.

I'm all ears.

Just my opinion, but I think Mark could be considered an Alpha Male. Many self-made men are.

Please no jokes, easy-e. :D

Suggestion - Use Equal Offense/Ghost matches instead of traditional qualifiers

Mark Griffin said:
This is not a "pick & choose" like the IPT. This will be done strictly on playing ability.

Therefore you will need a formalized and repeatable system in order to ascertain playing ability. The most obvious method would be qualification tournaments, but to be fair and representative would require multiple events in multiple locations, taking up a fair amount of time and money. The other method would be to use existing tournament results and rankning points, but the existing ones have far too few entrants and results to make them useful for anything but a handful of players.

So as an alternative have you considered using a equal offense format? (Playing the 10 Ball ghost and scoring by balls made as in QChallenge, Fargo etc.) You would set this up to have players create a qualifying score individually at at local Pool hall within guidelines you set. (Size of table, pocket size, maximum time allowed etc.) It would require the attempts to be refereed and verified by a network of local tournament directors, registered BCA referees, instructors etc. Possibly video recording for verification purposes could be used. A realtively low fee structure for each attempt should be possible.

It seems to me it could be quickly planned and implemented at fairly low cost. It would allow far more players to attempt to qualify, as they will not need to invest a large amount of time and money to travel to a qualifying tournament-style event. Multiple attemts would also be possible if deemed appropriate. Players with suitable tables at home would be able to participate as long as the designated referee was able to travel to them.

A website could be used to book attempts, automatically matching up entrants with available local referees and locations, take payments for entries and to log the results.

Perhaps this wouldn't be suitable as the only method of qualification, but used as a first level, with the top results given entry into smaller round of tournament-format qualifiers.

I wish you the best of luck with your new venture.

Rules

Cuebacca said "Hi, Mark. Please consider allowing the incoming player to pass the table back when a ball is pocketed on a called safety or on a slop. If the lowest numbered ball can be pocketed on a safety, it can make the safety too easy to play, since one doesn't have to control the speed of the object ball."

That is a done deal.

I just spoke with Ian Anderson - President of WPA - and they are implimenting a new rule that allows the incoming player to accept the table or give back to the previous shooter. This also applies to a ball that accidently falls in the wrong pocket. I have NOT seen the wording so please do not ask me a bunch of questions on this, cuz I don't know the answer.

Trying to remove some of the luck factor.

I might also throw in that I will "try" to get the US Open One Pocket either as one of our events - or in conjunction with one of our events.

Just my thoughts.

Why do you sound like they are competing? They are not competing for the same trophy..but a different division, if you will. I think, more the merrier. Double the exposure for pool, for the pros, industry and business owners...

I haven't read the entire thread yet so please forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but there is a real element of compitition between the two tours.

They are different entities and any given player can only be in one place at a time. Most tournaments include weekend days and there are only 52 of those in a year...and of those, several are unrealistic due to holidays.

So the "competition" would arise from scheduling conflicts...a subject that MJ has commented frequently about.

Awesome! :) Thanks for your reply.

players addresses etc

Just a "bump" to remind everyone that I am still looking for ways to get incontact with the "TOP" players. That is a real vague term. Basically anyone that thinks they have the ability to play at pro level.

We are looking for venues and to try and firm up some dates. With luck maybe we can announce something that will happen before Thanksgiving.

Main thing to remember - this is a go.

Much more info is still to come. Just please try and be patient. e-mail me (markg@playbca.com) and I will try to answer your questions.

One way would be to post flyers/notices at the pool halls around the country. And that's where this forum comes in.

Probably at least 75% of the good rooms, where the players you're after congregate, are also frequented by posters on this forum.

I'd suggest requesting that forum posters around the country email you their mailing address, and you send them some flyers, and have them cart them to their local rooms. Or, if they're technically inclined, email them back a PDF file or somesuch, that they can print out and then cart to their local rooms.

Besides that - I'm guessing that the folks on here who've read your posts, who also personally know players of the caliber you're after, have already mentioned your tour to them. But who knows? You might formalize that request.

Just a few ideas, use'em or not. :)

My bad...

Sorry, there was a thread made that people wondered if Mike J. was accusing Mark G. to "steel" his business plan and I thought you were piggy-backing off that thread. My bad, I misread.
