Questions for Mike Dechaine

Mike, I truly appreciate the thread. Very cool. Question I have... In your match with Rodney Morris, it seemed as if he was getting all the rolls and you couldn't catch a break. How do you keep from getting overly frustrated during a match like that & having it effect your game? So many times a few racks like that can really get in a player's head and cost you the match. By the way, it was a pleasure watching you play this weekend - congratulations!

Steve

I felt like I controlled myself this past weekend. Maybe I didn't explain it that well. I am cocky when I am put in a situation to be cocky. If i feel like I am being attacked, then thats when it happens.

BTW, I am insecure, VERY!!!

Dude, you have no reason to be insecure. Why do you always act like you have some out of control problem that you must keep in check? Silent confidence is more threatening than false bravado. Confidence comes from within as a result of great preparation. You are a killer. One of the very best nine / ten ballers out there today. The sooner you start knowing what you don't know and stop wasting energy on being on the "edge" the better off you will be. Until then people will consider your behavior as a childish .

Believe it or not I'm pulling for you as many others are too.

What's your thoughts on the Magic Rack?

Seems evident you've developed a bit of a reputation regarding racking. Does the Magic Rack speed up the racking process and decrease the contentiousness?

BTW, Kudos for not getting baited into the other thread. I hope you won't here cause you know sooner or later, people will bait.

Congrats on your big W, and best of rolls in your continued improvement. Impressive!

Best Regards,

Matt

I don't remember Rodney getting all the rolls but when it does happen, I have just been trying to breath a little more. This helps calming me down.

I wish is was that simple.

I like the magic rack in ten ball but dislike it in 9 ball. In 9 ball it is was to easy to make a ball but maybe if the 9 was racked on the spot it would be okay.

Thanks for taking time to come on here and post Mike. I watched one of your first matches at the latest Turning Stone, then heard you commentate right after that, and then watched your last game against Putnam. Congratulations on your win.

I was curious about your racking process and was hoping you could elaborate. Lots of times I saw you push the balls up with the triangle and quickly remove it after you set the head ball. In your case, does that seem to be the most efficient way to get a snug rack? Were the balls/racks/cloth tough at this tournament to get the rack the way your opponents wanted? When they brought up an issue with your rack, were you able to spot what they saw, or did you not care and just try to re-rack it?

I'm not anywhere near your level of play, but i'm sure several pros have similar issues with wanting a good rack at those events. Just curious what your thoughts were..thanks.

I just find the spot on the table that racks good. Most of the time it is in the same place they rack the balls.

Break

First thank you for doing this.
Everyone talked about your break being so good this weekend.
Did someone teach you your break or did you just develop it? Any tips or anything you are trying to do? cueball , english, power, aiming etc?

When are you going to propose to Brittany?

She's a honey!! It was nice to meet her along with you at the US Open 10 ball.

(I still can't believe they clocked you at 36 mph in that booth just @ 30 feet from the bar. Wow.)

If I adopt your quirky method of chalking the cue, will I soon be able to run racks like you do?

I mean when you pull the rack off the balls really quickly.

http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/24931064 go to 19:30 or so and watch from there. About ten seconds later, you push the balls up and just remove the rack quickly. I don't know much about racking secrets, but I would think that's a hard way to ensure a good, repetitive, tight rack. But what do I know.

Also, best advice for a player that started late and wants to accelerate the learning process to a high level other than the obvious (practice)? I'm in my late twenties and only started playing pool a few years ago, but I can run a few packs with ball-in-hand and a decent spread :p

Thanks again,

Congrats from back here in Maine, Mike.

Will you be at TJ's for the Joss Tour stop?

This is not a pitch to predator, but finding a cue that I love has really helped me out. I have been battling this for a long time, but have now found something I love.

Is the butt of your cue a P also, or just the shaft? Who made the butt? By the way, I really enjoy watching your game.

In another recent thread, some of us were saying that you are one of the best rotation game players in the world and others were saying something along the lines of "Let him play Shane a race to 100 10 ball and see what happens".

My belief is that you have the firepower to play with Shane, but his break is still better than most and it makes it like he's getting the 8. I believe that his break makes him look like he plays a little better than he actually plays. If you played Shane with a neutral breaker, how close do you think the match would be?

Thanks for making yourself available to the forum. It's not easy to take all the comments that goes on these forum, but I hope you can take it all with a grain of salt including the praises.

Was there a moment when you won a particular tournament that you felt you had become worthy of being a pro player ? I don't mean that in a bad way, but in a good way.

Best of luck in your ongoing career.

I would def play Shane. I think it would be exciting!! I am not a fan of the race to 100. I don't think its that true to who is the better player. Races to 25 are action packed and can show more dog in a player than the race to 100. Plus there is a give up factor in the race to 100.

I don't think so. I guess I have always felt like I could compete.

Great idea with this thread, Mike! You're an awesome player.

I've seen about five or six of your matches, and always notice how accurate your kicking is, especially on two rail shots. You seem to make more than you miss, though this may be my selective memory. Do you just eyeball the shot? Did studying diamond systems have a big effect on your accuracy, or is it more like a learned, repetitive thing?

Thanks. Good luck in your next tournament.
