questions for table mechanics

I hope this is the right place to ask these questions. I know there must be some talented and experienced table doctors here.

Recently I helped a friend replace the cloth on the rails of a GCIII, and we folded the extra cloth around the side pockets so that there was a visible seam exactly at the angle below the point of the cushion. After we put the rails back on the table I noticed a small bulge there that might possibly change the way the inside of the pocket plays. How should we have folded this area?

Seperately, there is a room here with 8' Diamonds ( 3 piece slate and drop pockets) that are all unlevel in the same strange way. They roll toward the center all along both long rails as if the slates are shimmed on the outsides and not the centers. What might cause this, and how could it be fixed?

The table mechanics on this forum don't seem to like answering these questions. Doctor Cue's Protege had a thread recently about side pockets on a gold crown throwing balls up and out. His had a fold underneath causing a horizontal bump across the middle of the facing, which I say will throw balls out all the time. I folded mine with an exposed seam vertically down the front edge of the facing. It looks crappy but plays great.

There was also a "how to make a pool table" thread that had a video which shows an exposed seam across the top of the side pocket facing. As long as the seam is not across the middle of the facing it should play fine. Gold Crowns will throw balls out anyway, due to the wide angled facings and the crappy ball return plastic in the bottom that will make them fly around and out.

The diamonds rolling to the middle? I have no idea. Maybe if there are no shims in the middle it can flex a little. Maybe the cloth wasn't tightened evenly?

unknownpro,

thanks for the response. I think our side pocket folds are the same as yours. It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look perfect either.

As to the rolling Diamonds: It's definitely not the cloth. This is a more severe and consistant problem than the cloth (860) could cause, plus it has been around through at least two recoverings including one by folks from Diamond. I guess I'll contact them and see what they say about it.

Tables

i wouls have to see photos of your side pockets. There are a few ways to do it. Folds will effect the way the ball goes in. The Diamond tables sound like they were not set up right. If you put the slate screws in wrong you can bowe the slate. It sounds like the slates are not supported in down the center so the slates are sagging a little.
