I am sure everyone saw it comming! After seing a few videos I have many questions, but we will save them for later. Since I am only doing shafts I have a question regarding them.

Do most cuemakers really go from 1x1 squares, to round, to cone, to taper??

Since I only have one taper bar I have been going from 1x1 squares to taper. I just let it ride the taper until im at 850 / 515, With all of the time waiting between turns of course. Only removing .040-.050 in two cuts each time out.

Most of the shaft wood I buy is in 1" rounds. It saves me time & I find it easier to grade them in the round state. I use my taper bar for all of the cuts on shafts. I used to take my 1st cut down to .750, but after some others stated that they go to .650 on the 1st cut, I have tryed it & that is now the way I do it. Then to .625, .600, .575,.550 & finally .530. Hope this helps...JER

My shaft machine has a taper bar and all my blanks run through it in all stages. My first pass takes the blank down to 18mm on the tip end and the joint end still hasn't hit the blade and doesn't for 2 or 3 more passes. I progress from there. I am in the process of building a CNC four shaft machine that can do what ever taper I want so things may change when that's completed but as of now, my blanks have the same taper at 13mm, 13.25mm, 13.5mm, and so fourth until the final pass is made.

It doesn't matter whether you start with squares or dowels,
nor if you use the make-a-cone step

what does matter:

1. take shallow cuts and,
allow enough time between cuts for the wood to stablize.

2. burn the ones that warp

Shafts

cool! I got responces from the superpowers of cue building. I consider you guyes 3 of the top 5 cuemakers that really know there stuff. Even if we have had our differences!

According to you post, I am doing it exactaly right. I just saw things a little different in the cue component videos that all. I really havn't made many regular shaft, but I am on my 3rd order of laminates. By 3rd order, I mean 3rd- 4x8 sheet of laminate maple. The disapointing thing is that I have given 56 of them away free. But I am having a blast with lots to learn.

These are made differently in that I have no wait time at all. From 1x1 squares I take .020 off each pass untill I have finnished product. I am sure that this is orthadox but thus far no problems. I have a shaft from a year ago that I purchased from the origional desiner. I wrote all measurents down then and they are all still the same.
Thanks guys
