R.I.P. - Broadway Billiards in NYC

I'm going to see if I can try and pick up a rack of balls or the "No Smoking" sign that everyone would smoke in front of on the stairway. Good times!

Hey Steve, I will always miss "OLD MAN SPANISH EDDIE". He used to rob me all day every day when I was a kid living in the Bronx. One time I was telling "Spanish Pete" that I was busted and had no money for the train to get uptown to the Bronx. I geuss the old man heard me and gave me back my 20 jelly beans an told me don't gamble unless you have the money to do so.....Do you remember how he used to talk????.......LOL Like he had marbles in his mouth......LOL LOL Hilarious I will miss that place.

Hah, great pic Andrew. I remember coming across an eighth of pot stuck up in one of the pipes above. What a choice bathroom!

Gambling with Spanish Eddie is practically a Rite of Passage in New York City pool. If you haven't gambled with Eddie, you haven't really gambled.

Hey Steven,

What kind of tables do they have there?

Which tables are still decent because I know those tables are pretty old.

this is kinda sad to me... Seems like way to many ""players" rooms are closing. Whether it's high rent or few customers. I was just in the city for the first time
last July and I sure wish I would have known about this place. I would've definitaly went to check it out, just to say I did... I did make it over to Amsterdam and
was pretty dissapointed. I had EXTREMELY HIGH expectations based on what I had read and heard (being NYC and all) but we have lots of places here in TX that
are ever bit as "nice" as Amsterdam was(without the outrageous prices). I personally like the seedier places. They seem more like a pool hall than a restaurant
with pool tables. I also really like the Nostalgia of old rooms( not sure how long this place was open in it's current location) I just like thinking about all the great
action that's some places have seen. It's too bad we're losing all the great old rooms for one reason or another. But this was a trend that started WAY before the
economy started slowing down IMO

They are Brunswick Gold Crown IIIs circa 1988 (give or take a year). I advise, if you're looking to purchase one, not simply to consider how it plays but the overall condition. Once it's moved, it really doesn't matter if it had a dead rail since that's going to get fixed once it's reassembled. You're looking for the ones that are the least damaged which sometimes means the ones that were reclothed the least.

A few notes on the tables: Some are good, some are bad. Broadway never worked on all the tables at the same time.... they'd do 4 or 5 tables every few months, so the quality of the tables is inconsistent.

They're all Gold Crowns, although I never paid enough attention as to whether they're Is, IIs, IIIs, or IVs. They all have ball returns. They're all brown (no black GCs, sorry!). All with green cloth.

Some of the tables near the back play well. 13 is definitely decent to play on; new cloth, rolls straight, OK rails. 15 plays pretty well, too.

This actually reminds me of a post from last year. I had said the bathrooms were pretty gross and I got this response....

"cleary, This is nonsense. The restrooms at Broadway are clean and kept that way. The Asian Gentlemen that operate the room are very strict about keeping it clean. Also there is a worker that brushes and wipes the rails of every table as soon as it is cleared. It is a clean and well lit room. A good selection of beers and not overpriced. In other words a good poolroom. When were you last in there?"

So the last time I was there, about a week or two ago, I took a panorama of the bathroom.

I guess it will now be something to remember it by
If that's what you consider clean I'd hate to know what the rest looks like.

Awesome! Which one did you get?

Table 8 seemed nice to me.

Im guessing they are all 3 piece slate. Anyone know? Im having trouble finding a Uhaul, so wondering if I can take it all apart and fit in a large pickup.

I was there last night, and everything was sort of up in the air.

When I grabbed a table last night, I was told that last night (Thursday) would be the final night. This came as news to everyone, as the owners had remained tight-lipped about it.

Later in the evening, I heard that tonight (Friday) would be the last night. I spoke with Mario (who works there) and asked if he was working tonight. He said he was, so I can only imaging that they'll be there tonight. The weekend, though? Probably closed for good.

So is tonight the last night? Or are they already done?

When I stopped down, there were still people playing, so Im guessing tonight is the last night. They are moving everything at 10am tomorrow.

I was able to break down and transport a GC I in a shortbed pickup, a Mazda B2200. Anything bigger would be easy.

awesome! Then this should work. Does anyone know if the gold crowns are 1 or 3 piece slate? Im assuming 3 pieces, but I would hate to be wrong.

I sure hope someone can take some pics tonight or tomorrow before it's closed forever. I'd love to see what it looks like on the inside.. AND from the street! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!

3 piece slate. Be very careful moving it and have a table mechanic disassemble and move it if at all possible. They usually hate to work on a table that was taken apart by someone else as they won't know if everything is there or where it is. Call Blatt Billiards and see if they can help you out. It'll cost more than the table though.

I heard that there are flyers saying coming soon Space Billiards. any truth to that?
