Race to 11, really?

Why was the final a race to 11? Isn't it normally an extended race since it's not a true double-elimination final?

Well, kind of, Doomcue.

In the 2003 final, it was Jeremy Jones over Jose Parica 11 - 4.

In the 2002, though Alex Pagulayan led 11 - 10 at one point, the final score was Ralf Souquet winning it 13 - 11.

Of course, this year, whether the race was 11 or 13, it was Gabe Owen's turn. Not likely that Thorsten Hohmann comes back from 11 - 3 to win a race to thirteen, is it?

I happen to think a race to thirteen is more befitting of the occasion. I find the WPC finals race to seventeen to be a bit tiresome.

That was the year it was pay-per-view (cable, not Internet), I think. Advertised as a race to 17, but cut short because they ran out of TV time.

I prefer the longer race for the final. Just curious about the length of the race, because I thought it was advertised as a race to 17 again this year.

I agree with you, though, I don't think there was any stopping Gabe this year. Not bad for a guy who primarily is a one-hole player....

When 9-ball tournaments moved away from a true double elimination format it was trying to gets its face on TV and you can thank Joe Kerr (tournament promoter in the 70's-80's) for all of that! There has been many major tournaments when the person from the one loss side has won the tournament in a one-race situation and the pressure to win is much less on him then the person who is undefeated and has to play only one set to win. The undefeated person has really been cheated if the one-loss person wins and even worse if the match is close.

Gabe Owen, won and won big against a former world champion. At least it should be a race to 15. When Pagulauyan won the World title he was down by 6-8 games at one point and came back to win 17-13 the extended race helped both players.

All finals of major tournaments should have an extended finals or a race to 9 double elimination format or like the Reno Sands tournament from years past when it was a race to 7 best 2 out of 3 sets finals!

All regional tournaments Viking and Joss are true double elimination formats in the finals.

Congradulations to Gabe Owen for being the 2004 US Open 9-ball Champion!
