Radial System

I'm considering trying the Radial system, and have noticed Atlas carries two taps, one undersized. Do most people use the "regular" tap for both the butt and shaft, or should the undersized one be used for the shafts? Does anyone know how undersized the smaller one is?

The undersize tap is only .002 smaller than the regular size.

History: At one time about 4 years ago the Radial (tm) pin was .002 larger than the version seen today. They had some complaints because it was a tight fit so they made the pin smaller without telling anybody. I found the fit was so sloppy I insisted that they make a smaller tap because I like a snug fit.

Arnot,
Thanks. Perhaps I might be better off just using the undersized tap for both the butt and shaft.

Al,
Get both taps as different woods tap looser than others. Check out the Radially threaded pins I sell when you get ready for some pins.

Chris, are you saying some maples tap looser than other maples where it would be a problem?

The only time I have had trouble with the tapped hole in a shaft with the Radial is when I used some off brand pins from another cue maker that weren't turned to the proper size.

Just curious, how many different makers of Radials are there, I know of Atlas, and the cue maker/ machinist in New York. Any others.

Schmelke's is different. I think it's the same as the Taiwan version on Omega and Varner cues.
PFD's 5/16 radial is another one.

Yes maple does differ in hardness as well as those who tap into exotics. Laminated shafts tap differently also.
