Rail height

Thanks for your input, That`s the kind of info I was looking for!

1. The balls jump a little off the rail if hit firm.

2. I found some facings on ebay that are 1/4 " but they say they are 75 durometer. exactly what does that mean? Is it the softness of the rubber? do you think they would work?

3.Do you know the difference between the orange colored rubber and the black neoprene rubber? Which is best in your opinion?

Thanks H.P.

then your rails are too low .... or your balls are too big :)

the 60 durometer neoprene is available on amazon and it is black. it is available in small sheets.

you need to trim it to fit I used a little mini belt sander from harbor freight.

you need to make sure you have the right profile cushion and they are mounted appropriately .....

if you want things to go well you are going to have to do some more research on this site....

Not a mechanic but IMO cloth changes will change the bed speed little effect on cushion speed.
Rails too fast?
Balls hopping?
Bed too fast?
Whats the exact problem? Your boy obviously knows what he wants. Maybe what he wants is a table that simulates bar tables which IMO is usually very slow bed speed from non worsted, sometimes rubber backed cloth. This stuff is cheap. But will certainly slow the bed.

Hi!, We always play on 860 simonis, The bar boxes in our area, are all usually covered in 860. Plus he also plays on 9 footers covered in 860 , so he knows whats right an whats not. Heck, last nite in our 8ball vegas league he had 4 b& r`s back to back on a 7 ft diamond with simonis. I know its the rails that play fast, If I remember correctly they said either accufast or superspeed on them when I put the table together a few years back.

But in my opinion , they play too fast, dont really know why?

I will adjust the rail height, an shim the pockets and go from there . If that does not fix our issues I will have the rails redone.

Thanks

Before you commit to new rail cloth I would take a rail off and unstaple the ends without disturbing the feather strip. Cut a new facing out of 1/4 inch material and put it in there. Try restretching the cloth and stapling. You may be surprised and find there's enough cloth there to accomplish it even if the cloth gets a bit short underneath as long as you can staple it you can at least try out the new pocket size to see if you like it or not before committing too much time and money. My guess is that the pockets will still be "buckets" for your son's needs and sub rail extensions will ultimately be desirable.

Thanks, Great advice I will try that.

I have a friend with an old gandy and we took it apart and added 1/4 inch shims right on top of the 1/8 inch ones that were already there and the rail cloth covered them. It really didn't play too bad in spite of having so much facing material. It had 5 inch plus buckets to begin with and it was a huge improvement for an investment of a couple hours. As I recall we did it spur of moment early on during a party and continued playing after we were done until dawn.
