Rail Hop question

I have seen this happen on a few tables in my area, where any ball that strikes the rail (usually short rail) will rebound with a hop. The noise the hop makes is like nails on a chalkboard to me. My question is does this simply happen to rails installed too low? So the equator of the ball is above the rail?

If the rails were installed perfectly could this happen to a table overtime or would you suggest it was just a bad install upfront?

Any help is much appreciated.

There's way to many factors involved to just point out cushions as solely the problem, especially when we have no idea as to what kind of table (s) you're referring to.

for one example Connelly 8' drop pockets

I just had the rails replaced (no idea what kind) and the whole table recovered with simonis. After the job was done it played great and NO rail hop. It's been 6 mo, one short rail hops consistently and the other is getting there. After reading a few other posts on here I was going to check the rail bolts when I got home and maybe measure rail height.

Well, that makes a little more sense, seeing how the cushion's have been replaced. New cloth does a lot to hide the flaws in the work performed, but also, as cloth breaks in, it also shows a lot of other things as well, like over cleaning the balls with the Aramith ball cleaner, use to much to often, it starts building up on the nose of the cushions and pocket facings, and you can tell by the discoloration on the cloth just how much it's building up. What that build up does is create friction, friction transfers to the balls, making them more grippy so to speak against the nose of the cushions, which in turn can want them to climb the nose of the cushion's instead of rebounding as normal. But of course, you could have had some bad work done replacing the cushion's as well, so without actually being there to look at your table, it's just a guessing game at this point.

Do you make it a habit of making an appointment with someone to re do their table for thousands and then flake out and not return their calls. Very disappointing...cause you sounded like a great table mechanic...I will no longer be recommending you. Not sure how anyone can do business this way.
 
What the hell are you talking about, I'm in the process of returning and installing 2 Gold Crowns to the San Francisco area now....did I now get to you soon enough or something, if so, all I can say is I'm sorry, but I can only do so much work at a time, as in everyone can't be next up on my list.
 
If you think I skipped out of California and left you hanging, I had a wrongful death lawsuit going on over my son's death, and court was coming up in late May of this year, so I didn't know, or don't remember leaving you out, but I am however like I said, on my way back to the San Francisco area now, recovering pool tables as I work my way back down there. As far as Hardtimes in Sacramento goes, I guess you really have no idea what you're talking about, but maybe you should have a talk with Mike, the owner....maybe then you'll get the straight facts about my doing work there on the tables....ya think?
 
This was not a table in CA but the one you were supposed to do in Vegas over the end of October/beginning november.

What does this have to do with rail hop? You guys should take your personal business to private messaging. :idea:
