rail work

I have a Gold Crown 1. It was purchased from an original owner who had it in his
den since the 60's. I had it set up by a well respected mechanic from the Baltimore
area. He took the rails to his shop and installed super speed. Set the table up with
the new cushions and 860. The cushions play very stiff. They bank long and come up
at least a diamond off on three rail kicks. Any thoughts?
I live in Wilmington, DE, half way between Baltimore and Philly. Looking for someone
who can install Artemis if that would help.

Contact Mark Gregory and send the rails to him. He is the best. His reputation is stellar. Your rails will be perfect and completed on time.

Your 3rail kick is a diamond long?

Most tables play long at first with new Simonis cloth. I'm not saying it's not the cushions as I know nothing about them. But, every time a table is recovered at the hall I go to it plays long for a time & then gets back online after a while.

At home, with less use, it will take longer if that's what it is.

Good Luck,
Rick

I've said it a thousand times if I've said it once. GC1's 2's and early 3's are not designed for a straight cushion exchange with today's Brunswick Super Speed cushions or any other K55 profile cushions, the sub-rails have to be modified in order to accept new modern cushions, but so called table mechanic's will simply replace them, charge for the replacement and call the job done. NO top tier table mechanic is going to simply install the new cushions without first redesigning the sub-rails to accept the new cushions, so guess what happened to your rails?

Thanks for the feedback. Glenn you sound like a mechanic. Where are you located? Do you know John Burns. He did the work. With his reputation I assumed he did the necessary shop work. Maybe not. Could it be a bad batch of rubber? Regardless, do you know of someone in the Philly/Baltimore area that could work on this for me?

Yes, I sometimes work as a pool table mechanic...LOL and yes I know John. He does most of the work moving, recovering, and setting pool tables up in your area. There's a little more to it when it comes to changing the cushions on older GC's to get them to play like today's tables do, I'm not 100% sure John has them changes down pat in order to make them. I have spent some time with John at his shop, and showed him how I rebuilt a set of GC4 rails, but it wasn't enough time to really teach John all the in's and out's of this level of mechanic's, so I'm not quite sure what work he did do to your GC.

This is more like what I deal with, being the condition of most older GC's as you can see in the before and after pictures. It's had for me to picture a GC1 that has perfect sub-rails that don't need any work done to them at all, but still, even changing the cushions requires updated sub-rails.
