raised areas in slate

I bought a used 8.5' Gold Crown I table that looked to be in great condition, but as it turns out the slates have veins running through them. In these veins are high spots that makes the table play terrible. Has anyone ever had this problem and found a way to correct it short of replacing the slates with new ones?

Slate Veins

My 1923 BBC table has veins running through the 1.5 inch slate. Looks like cracks repaired but this is common for some types of slate, especially that from Pennsylvania. It has not affected the play or surface or strength. Is it possible that someone applied something thinking it was cracked and did not finish to the original flat surface?

these veins run all the way through the slate from top to bottom and there are cracks on the edge of the slate where the veins are. i'm having problems with ball hops and slow rolling balls changing direction. this is not repairs gone bad.

These veins are black and run all the way across the slab and all the way through from top to bottom. They are harder than the rest of the slate appear to be brittle as there are splits along the edge of the slate where these veins are. This is not repairs, but apparently have been there since the table built in the 1960's at which time they were most likely flat.
