Rambos...everywhere!

...and they're all pretty damned proud of them! After the prices in the 3rd Blue Book came out, everyone seems to think that a plain Rambow with an ivory buttcap (the same cue you used to be able to get for $1,200 anytime they came on Ebay) is automatically worth $5,000+...

Whew! I was getting concerned that overpriced cues were becoming so difficult to locate!

Consumers will determine values of cues....not the group that cntributed to BB3 pricing. If BB3 pricing is analyized it would appear that some members of the panel had their own agenda.;)

I hadn't thought of it that way, but....

The following cue on ebay earlier this month would support what you are saying - it didn't hit the opening ebay bid, which was quite a bit lower than the price BB3 had tagged on a very similar Rambo:

He can run but he can't hide!

Charges 3hun to appraise a Q @ 27 and then buys it for 12 on the bay. If my appraisal is 125% "off" the LEAST I do is give dude back the 3hun I beat him out of in view of how KAKA my appraisal was....

This established level of integrity might be the primary reason he secured the position he has.

Still scratching my head about HERCEK and B. SZAM pricing:confused:

If you are talking about the Rambo Joel Hercek refinished, in all fairness, after winning, as I remember it, he offered to let the seller keep the cue AND to help with re-writing the ebay description before re-listing - the seller turned him down and took the money.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of that. I apologize for the error in that portion of my post.

If you didn't see the offer in writing to help the guy, don't believe it.

Based on the IPT's track record in terms of honesty I think your right!!;)

I believe it - Deno's never given me any reason to doubt his word. After this IPT thing gets settled and he responds to what's been said here about him, perhaps I'll eat crow, but I'm prepared to do that.

I am glad this thread came up..........I ran into a friend this past weekend at a Joss Tournament and he has a very nice 2 piece Willie Hoppe with the white ring in the bottom. Another friend of his has him convinced that if the blue book says it is worth $xxxx asmount of dollars then that is what he should sell it for. 1st off i was not trying to buy it and tried to convince him that it is only worth what someone would be willing to pay for it. Because of the white ring he is also convinced by this other friend that Herman Rambo did indeed make it. I tried to explain that Mr Rambow was only 1 of the workers in that shop and that there was no way of telling if he made it definately unless it was signed. His other friend insists that i am wrong and that because of the ring it was made by Rambow. So now after all this writing...am i correct in my assumptions???????.....mike

...another tie-in to that Hercek-restored Rambo! In that thread we discussed a letter of authentication that Deno Andrews had written for someone selling a Rambo Hoppe. I wanted to know how Deno was able to tell that the cue was made by Rambo. His response was that it was all in the letter and had to do with the joint, tapers, etc...basically stuff that I still don't know. Since then I have studied pics of known Rambo butts, joints, etc., trying to find consistencies so that I could eventually tell if a Hoppe 2-piece was made by Rambo - still not there yet. But I do believe that Deno has the knowledge to do so. I don't know anyone else who does.

To answer your question, no, just because it has a Hoppe ring doesn't mean it was made by Rambo. But if it has one of the first two labels, and the Hoppe ring, then it MIGHT have been made by Rambo, since he was working for Brunswick during the period of the first label and most (if not all) of the period when the second label was used.

Scott.....There is no label on his cue from what he tells me so there is no way of telling other than having Deno look at it...correct........mike

...unless you can find someone else who knows some Rambo identification details that might be evident on the cue. I don't know any other than Rambo's personalization of some cues.

Scott...Thanks for your help. I do know that he has never had the cue refinished and he tells me that there has never been a label to the best of his knowledge. I have 3 untouched 2 piece hoppe cues here that i own. 2 have the green label and 1 has the blue label. but only 1 of them have the "hoppe ring".......and i just had Mike Webb do a conversion for me on 1 that i just recently got on ebay. Would it be wise to just leave them alone with the signature and stickers or is it worthwhile to have another conversion done? thanks for your help and opinion which i trust......................mike

Thanks - it can be a tough call. I have purchased 6 Hoppe 2-piece cues. I bought the first one when I didn't know that 1-pieces made better conversions (for full-splice, especially). Jerry Rauenzahn made a beautiful conversion out of it. Since then I have bought 5 more and each was such a nice piece of history as-is, that I couldn't convert any of them. I kept 4 and sold 1 - wish I had it back!

Please send me pics - I would love to see them. I could only tell you what I would do, but it's a personal decision you will have to make.

My suggestion is that if you are looking for a Hoppe 2-piece or Titlist 1-piece to convert, and not interested in keeping as a collectible, don't buy a 2-piece - you will end up collecting them. Sometimes it is the same for 1-piece cues if they look real nice - it is hard to cut a historical piece. I try to buy only really ugly 1-piece Titlists so that they NEED to be converted :)
