Ranking the players

With the WPA rankings, which apparently use only points accumulated in a WPA event, and now the Fargo rankings, how would we rank the best players if we had to pick the top ten? what players out there are always a threat to win? Here's mine, and I know I'll skip somebody- Ko Pin Yi, Wu, Appleton, Feijen, SVB, Biado, Bustamante, Chua, Orcollo, Chang Jung Lin.

In no particular order

1) SVB
2) Wu
3)Bergman (who now has the 11th spot in the world, and overtook Mike Dechaine).
4)Biado
5) Yu Lung Chang
6) Cheng
7) Feijen
8) Appleton
9) Alex P.
10) Chua

Might want to add Baseth Mocaibat from the Philippines. Haven't seen him in any tournaments. But watched some youtube videos of him spotting Francisco Bustamante the 9 in 10 ball and winning. Also spotted Efren Reyes the 9. There are also videos of him beating Jeffrey Ignacio and Carlo Biado. That's pretty strong where I come from.

Everyone mentioned is worthy of top ten status. Toasty must be easy to overlook, as he has been skipped for Mosconi Cup and King's Cup. I should have included him, because he's one of my favorites.

It really boggles my mind that there are so many posts like this. Everyone has a different opinion on who the top 10 are. This opinion is biased towards players they like, players who have most recently won tournaments, players they have seen play, etc. You can't possibly compile an accurate list of top 10 players by subjectively trying to determine who is better.

What you can do is create a list based objectively on the wins/losses the players have had. The closest thing to an accurate representation of this right now is fargo ratings. These rating don't prove conclusively that one player is better than another (there is no way to determine this accurately), but basing your top 10 list on the actual wins/losses is going to be far more accurate than any list you can just make up based on your opinion.

Its all in good fun; what's the harm?

I know its a popular subject, and has been discussed quite often. Just wondered who people would put on their own list, knowing it was subjective. I thought maybe there was some I was overlooking, and wanted them to get some attention. Plus, this makes me look a little harder at my list

I think mainland China will take over the top 10 entirely within the next 10 years or so.

I think today, except for Shane, the rest of the top 10 would be either from mainland China, Chinese Taipei, or the Philippines.

I know there are some other Americans and Europeans in the "top 10", but I believe that is only because they have more exposure than many of the Asians that don't leave their home country.

Fair enough, so what subjective criteria are you using to determine which world class player is better than another? I mean there are many more than 10 players in the world who are capable of winning any given tournament any given day, and they can all play at the highest level. All you have to go off of is your limited experience seeing only some of these players play, tournament results, and then what everyone else says about them which may or may not be true.

The problem with the Fargo rating is it just gives you a number ,,you have no idea how they got to the number ,,

Railbird, you are exactly right. All I have to go by is the few players I have seen, and I know I haven't seen much of a good number of players. Just wanted to get an idea of who others thought were top ten worthy, and compare it with my own. There are so many good Asian players that we see so little over here, thought it would be a good idea to discuss it. I like your idea about wins and losses, even kept up with all the tournaments a few years back that were in the states and the prestigious overseas events, to see who did what, but that doesn't seem quite fair to the Asian contingent, just because so much goes on I at least don't know about.
I know I could go by the Fargo rating, and I appreciate what they are trying to accomplish and the hard work involved, but I'm not sold on it yet

I guess I'll be the first to ask a stupid question. Are we talking about the best 9 ball player, the best 10 ball player, the best 1p player, the best 14.1 player, or the best all around? If it's all around, Thorsten would be my #1 best all around. Niels second. 3-10...who cares.

It is coming. You will be able to look at all your matches that are in the system. Bring around it , and knowing both Mike and Steve, it could not be in better hands.

mark and Ozzy did not jump on this the first time they saw it. It was a long process of them analyzing Fargo Rate before tying it to their name.

You can keep doubting, and there are too many highly intelligent people who understand the math and what the data shows to go away. ,it will only get bigger, as more matches are played.
