Rare bird 93 Schon 31” shaft

I picked up a 93 Schon LTD last month, a rather simple LTD, that came with two shafts. Both Shafts have the logo in the joint collar. One of the shafts is 31”, is a full 13mm and plays surprisingly well. I’ve had half a dozen or so Schons over the years, an old R-6 and an old R-10 among them.

I haven’t posted for quite a while as the atmosphere changed over the years.

I used this forum for years as research into older cues, so maybe one of these pics will help those in doing research.

One thing of note about the 93 is the pin. I had only seen the acme pin for 93, but when I started to do some sleuthing, I noticed some 93’s had a normal 5/16x14 with a small nose. This cue being one of them.

Both of the 93 shafts have the Schon logo in the collar. The other Schon in the pics is from somewhere between 87-93. That cue came with one micarta ferrule and one ivory ferrule.

Highly unlikely. Generally when a collar is swapped onto a new shaft, the pilot does not go with the collar. Schon has a very distinct linen sleeve over the pilot.

I had a 30” stitch ring shaft with a micarta ferrule years ago, so I know that Bob and eventually Evan would do such things that are out of the norm.

I have a couple of '93s with the same pins as yours.

The one with the standard Schon 5/16"-14 is a CX. It also has the Schon marked collar in black where the '93 SL with the "Acme" pin has the collar in gold.

Never seen a 31" factory shaft.
Thanks for posting.

Seyberts sells Schon shafts in 31". I know the last time I was at Schon, they had racks of finished shafts in multiple lengths. What they offered in the 90's' I wouldn't know.

Actually it normally does. The shaft is machined at the top of the joint into a tenon then a new shaft is installed onto the tenon.

So you are saying this is a CX?

Here are some better pics of the joint and the ferrules. Everything looks right for a stock shaft from 93 to me.

One thing I just thought of, there was a great shop here in Gresham, Billiards N Bagels years ago. Jim Oswald had an impressive selection, upwards of 50 different cue makers cues in the shop at any time. I know he had his black book of cue makers. I would go to his shop and listen to his stories most Friday nights around 20 years ago when my girlfriend was bartending. I do recall him saying he had a close relationship with Bob Runde and I believe he was the only Runde dealer for the first decade after Bob left Schon. If I recall, Jim had all sorts of extra length shafts and a huge stash of superior wood blanks that he would send out to cue makers to have them turn them into shafts.

What I’m saying, is if this cue originally came from Billiards N Bagels, and I bought it a 100 blocks from his old shop, anything is possible.

No.
I'm saying not all '93 Schons with the marked collar had the so-called "Acme" pin. My '93 CX with the collar marked Schon 13 has the traditional Schon 5/16"-14 pin.

I have no idea what line your Schon is from.

Here is a photo of the butt, a CX18 purchased new in '93.
