Efren's Mini-Tourn BACKER
Silver Member
This thread is primarily dedicated to Ratchet who I met for the first time at DCC this year. He volunteered his time to AZ Billiard Room monitor along with perennial help from goinproin07 (Justin). Ratchet & Justin were tireless with enormous amounts of time spent in the AZ billiard Room.
I had the chance to meet many people from AZ Billiards and that was great to put a face with these screen names. Believe me WillieBetmore is not a Phat Guy with a pocket full of money. Money, yes but that was obvious by his attempt to purchase all of the tickets for the drawing to play Jeanette Lee and Efren Reyes. MThornto somehow slipped in a won one of the two drawings and hooked up with Jeanette (I mean partnered up with). I clarified that because of the way some people interpret these Internet forum posts. Jeanette is a classy lady and George Breedlove has to be a Saint. It appears that he is very secure in his relationship with Jeanette and is a great father. I watched him feeding and pampering their daughter "Little Black Widow" several times at the tournament.
Some of the people I can remember from the tournament were Samiel (who like Williebetmore, I would never have recognized :-) )
I met dozens of people who I have probably already forgotten most of their names even though I brought a cheat sheet with me but left it in my suitcase. Hal was there, Ratchet, Justin Harris and MARTIN who is now my best friend :-). Martin whipped up on me playing some one pocket. I forget his screen name but he plays one pocket very well. I never got the chance to return the favor as I promised. However Martin was busy building credits as later on in the tournament he saw me looking rather dejected because of my lack of performance in the main one pocket and nine ball tournaments and asked me if I was playing in the mini-32 man/woman one pocket tournament. It was a race to 32 with single elimination $25.00 per person and it had been sold out for days. I remarked that I had heard it was full and Martin asked if I wanted to purchase his friend's spot, a Mr. Whitehead. I said sure not knowing at that time how much it was going to cost. Martin added even more credits to his resume by telling me that it wasn't going to cost me anything extra either. The spots often sold for $40 as there was a $1,000 added. It was already late Friday night (the second Friday night) and to my credit all I had done was get whipped up on by a guy named McCloskey playing both nine ball and eight ball on a bar box (across the street at the Exectuvie Inn)and a very poor performance in the tournament at DCC.
I gave Martin the $25 for the spot and rushed to the mini-tournament site in the main room only to find the tournament was filled with champions and wannabee champions. Now this was just to my liking but I still wasn't playing well and barely escaped getting knocked out of my first two matches by two guys who I forget their names. What was neat about this tournament is that there were a couple of extra tables open that you coudl practice on while you waited for your match to come up. Some of the matches were taking incredibly long and the wait was excrutiating at times. So I did what any of you would have done, I played for HOURS practicing by myself for free waiting for my name to be called. I drank cup of coffee after cup of coffee. I started of the mini-tournament by watching Williebetmor and Mthornto playing partners with Efren Reyes and Jeanette Lee until they called my name for the tournament. Boy was I green with envy. I couldn't decide who I was more jealous of Mthornto or Williebetmore. Williebetmore was actually chatting with Efren Reyes nonstop. I thought for a minute that Williebetmore spoke Tagalog as Efren was laughing, smiling and responding constantly. I think Williebetmore learned all of the secrets of pool during that rather lengthy partnership. He sure was having a good time as was his opponents. That was a great idea but why should the guy with the most money always win the best prize? ;-)
The AZ billiard room was non-stop with pro after pro visiting the room, giving clinics and showing their wares. I missed meeting OldHasBeen although he may have snuck up while I was engrossed in learning some new tricks of the trade and got bore watching me dog ball after ball. I heard he visited the room several times and there were lots of people who ambled in and out before I got a chance to say hello. Tom (aka: Ratchet) was busy socializing with every person who came in the door. He was the perfect host and room monitor. Fred Agnir visited often and I never got the chance to ask Fred to show me some of the Hal Houle aiming systems. Maybe next time. JimboCt showed up. It was easy to spot him once he got there but showed up with no cues to show. In fact I never saw him hit a ball. Almost all of the pros showed up and signed an AZ Billiard banner/poster. The numbers of pros that came through must have been in the dozens. That poster would be a nice keepsake for a pool hall. Even the non-pro banner would be a great keepsake as it has many of the regular posters and lurkers on RSB.
Did I say that there were more lurkers visting the AZ billiard room than real name screen names? I think I met more lurkers than regular posters. Their screen names escape me but there are plenty who monitor the Forum and don't post often as they don't appreciate the occasional flaming that occurs on forums of this type. Also many don't want to spend all of their time typing notes and trying to explain their perspective. But the lurkers are out there and a great bunch of guys and gals they were.
Overall I would say that the AZ billiard room was a huge success. We probably needed another table or two. The table was occupied 24/7 even if it was the little Marine, Justin who was standing guard and taking on all comers at any hour of the day or night.
Jerry Briesath, Tom Simpson, Charley Bond, Semper Fi and the best APA 3 in the country, his wife, all visited and shared in the fun. I am just now recovering from the overload of so much pool. God, it was great.
Thanks AZ Billiard for making it an even bigger success.

Warm Regards,
JoeyA

Joey - We did meet in the AZ room.
I was the one talking about playing someone for cash and this person asked you to play. You said "No, but I'll play you some" referring to me. Later on (on my way to my room) I told you that we could play some. I had checked you out in New Orleans. Just then, the elevator door closed and nothing more was ever said.

Ps. - I also heard about your terrible experience with Katrina. Hope all is going well for you.

The food has gone Waaaay down for this years DCC.

All that pool 'stuff' was great, but what about the FOOD? The FOOD? C'mon man, what about the FOOD?

True Story - While paying my check one afternoon, there was a nice local couple (maybe in their 50's) paying their check. They knew the lady manager taking care of the register and she asked how their meal went.
The gentleman says, "It was OK but why have you raised the price a buck and eliminated some of the best stuff from the salad bar"?
The manager replies - "Oh, don't worry about that - that's is just for this week with this pool tournament going on and everything will be back to normal by next week"!
Man - That really burned me up!
Another time I ordered the Prime Rib dinner and it honestly took over 40 minutes to arrive. When it did, it was so over-cooked (I had ordered it medium) that I could hardly eat it. The "Chef Chris" offered me another and I said - "I'll be damned if I'm going to wait another 30 or 40 minutes"!
He said I could get another at anytime in the future.
I forgot about it and when checking out of the hotel, I remembered it and got a dinner chit from the restaurant manager for anytime, even next year.
The entire hotel has had a complete renovation but nothing at all has been done to the restaurant. I couldn't believe that the same stools that fall backwards every time someone sits down are still there.
Bottom Line - They had us trapped - they knew it - and they took advantage of us with inflated prices and inferior product & service.

OHB: The food has gone Waaaay done for this years DCC.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. Prime rib dinner ticket for NEXT year ? Yeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa !
Are there any Chinese Buffets around there?

A couple DCC's ago, I was in need of a DECENT cup of coffee. I admit it, I am hooked. I could not stand the coffee provided at the Executive West Hotel and immediately inquired about a nearby Starbucks. The valet guy told me there was a Starbucks across the street at the airport. So off I went on the shuttle bus to the airport, and he dropped me off. I traversed the long hallways of the airport and came across a security gate. Yes, there was a Starbucks there all right, but you had to have a ticket to board an airplane to get there. I was totally bummed out!

So I then called the valet at the Executive West Hotel to please pick me up and bring me back. I looked in the Yellow Pages and found a Starbucks in Louisville. I was a woman on a mission to get my coffee, and since I drove to Louisville from D.C., I hopped in my car to make the trek to Starbucks. My counterpart, God love him, left the glove compartment door open, and I had a dead battery. The caffeine withdrawls at this point were reaching a fever pitch.

After I got jump-started, I followed the directions given to me, about a 20-minute drive, in pursuit of Starbucks. I landed, I conquered, and I got me a triple-shot cappie. On the return trip back to the hotel, I was calm, sipping my hot cup of joe, until I came upon a cloverleaf cluster with multiple highway ramps. I drove by the Executive West Hotel five times before I found the right exit ramp. What an experience, all for a cup of decent coffee. :p

I am glad that you so thoroughly enjoyed what could have been a better time in the tournament department and I thank you for the very kind words I myself owe Randi & Martin & ? an apology and I do so sincerely want to apologize, I will not go into it because it is merely the stuff that feeds a little man (Like Billy who is over on RSB trashing me for this one blot on my character at DCC) and it was such a minor thing in the scheme of things.only someone looking for a chink in the armor of such a good thing would make it an issue .......

I dont know what became of Justin after I left ?? For those who dont know Justin (screen name goinproin'07) Is a US Marine awaiting medical discharge who's plans hit a snag when his room mate threw him out over a very petty issue ,Justin had enough money to comfortably eat on and get his smokes and his plane ticket to get back home on . I adopted him and offered him the use of my room while i was there and actually had to drag him asleep out of the AZ room and roll him into the extra bed , he was out in seconds ...He is one hell of a nice kid 23 y.o. going thru a separation and has a beautiful little girl
I ended up staying 2 additional days so he could have a place to sleep but with all that was going on at DCC and in The AZ-OP room it wasnt a difficult decision to make lololol. I pray that he met another benefactor and got safely on his plane home....

Hey Justin ......Holla if ya hear me ! Semper Fi...

I really enjoyed meeting every single person (no exceptions) there and sincere hope to be able to do it all over again next year and if asked again would be glad to help the room once again . It was my privilege

When did you get there ?? I left late tuesday night ?? there were quite a few nametags still on the table when I left ....Sorry I missed you also but we will do this again.....

Ratchet - so many people ....so little me ...lololololol

Tom, if you say that was you it must have been you. Sorry I didn't know you were OHB as we never introduced ourselves. When Sarah Rousey and I were getting ready to play a friendly challenge match, someone and I thought it was you, said to me, "Do you want to bet $50 on the side?". I felt sure I could beat up on Sarah and only wanted to play her for the $5.00 bill that I asked her to sign after the match and didn't like the idea of someone butting into what was a friendly fun thing and making this into a gambling match. That's when I told you no I don't want to bet $50 on the side but that I would play you. Sorry you had to check me out in New Orleans before asking me to play. I was playing pretty poorly all tournament long and you probably could have easily lifted a few hundred off of me.

And if I remember correctly, at the elevator you said something to the effect of "I checked you out and it looks like we aren't too far apart", but I didn't hear a request to play. I guess I wasn't listening at that point.

Weren't you telling someone at the DCC that gambling is bad for pool? If so, in what context were you talking about.

I didn't know you were OHB or Tom Ferry but would have enjoyed the opportunity to compete with you and if you were the person who spoke to me, "Do you want to bet $50 on the side", about my match with Sarah Rousey?, then I would have really enjoyed beating you out of a few bucks but not with Sarah involved. She is a sweet gal and a real sport.

Your Avatar doesn't resemble you and I'm sorry I officially missed meeting you. I still can't believe that was you at the match.

Sorry we didn't start out on better terms, Tom. Maybe next time.

Warm Regards,
JoeyA
