Rating players

I was reading a post where they were categorizing players as "short stop", "A player", "pro player", "hustler - road player".

Whats the difference between a short stop and a A player?

Who's better, a "pro player" or a "hustler - road player"?

Is there a general rating system of players in pool besides the league system? If there is, what is it? Is confusing to me reading about many different categories. I think we should have a standard classification.

How do you rate a player?

Can you rate yourself?

The way I have always understood it.

A player - Threat to cash in most regional tours will not win.
Shortstop - Win regional tours, threat to cash in big tournaments.
Semi-pro - Win regional tours, threat to finish high in big tournamets.
Pro - Obvious

Hustler/road player is always unknown this is not a level/speed.

To add, I think a "shortstop" occasionally will win 1 or 2 regional stops, but a "semi-pro" will win a regional a handful of times and typically expected to finish in the top 5.

It seems to differ depending on the area of the country but here in NYC we generally rate them as follows:

Pro: Top players obviously

Shortstop: Not good enough to play on a pro tour but still very good, will sometimes upset a pro. Usually gets weight from a pro.

Open: Very good player, a little under a shortstop. High run of 100+ balls. Can occasionally beat or give a pro a tough game in a short race but also can get absolutely drilled by a pro. Not nearly good enough to make a living at pool.

A player: Good amateur player, but not a threat to win a regional tour stop. In 14.1 will have a high run in the 70-110 ball range. Usually gets the 7 ball or 8 ball from an open player.

Road Player/hustler: Can be any skill level from A player to pro level. Good at making games.
