You'll have to make one. Schuler will not sell them. Lots of luck, because they have a fit between the threads of the screw & the threads of the bushing. Then there is a tight fit between the outside diameter of the aluminum bushing in the shaft & the wood in the joint, of the butt. Either find somewhere to buy a shaft or give it back to the person & admit that it's over your head. I've seen ,on more than one occation, two people(one holding the shaft & one twisting the butt), trying to get these cues apart...JER

ya, i've seen one of these after it failed, and your options are: 1. new shaft from Schuler, 2. used Schuler shaft on the market, or 3. send it to them to fix. those inserts are aircraft aluminum and unlike anything else out there.

thank you very much for saving me the trouble of even trying.
I'll just tell him he needs to order a shaft from shueler.

I don't see why you can't do the job. A std. 14 thrd. insert will work. Just trim the head after installation and give it a wood pilot.

If the client demands originality, make an aluminum insert. I don't see that as an issue though, the client's not going to care whether it's alum. or not.

If you don't like either of those options, I will sell you a true Schuler insert but you may not like that either.

I gotta tell ya, I'd rather date a fat girl than turn work away.

Hi KJ; I have made dozens of Schuler shafts. I just don't think the poster sounds like he has the expierience, to tackle this one. I try to give advice to match their expierience level. ...JER

Hi Jer,
I guess I mistakenly assume the opposite.

As in this case, when someone accepts the task of building a shaft, he's already convinced himself and his client that he can do the job. Otherwise, why accept the job in the first place? Not following through can & will hurt future business. It's about reputation.

I know that I haven't been here any great length of time but I'm beginning to get the sense that this kind of thing happens more often than what I would have thought. In the end, it's the client that will take the hit and that should never be. I'm not trying to belittle anyone here but there is a level of honesty and integrity at the heart of this profession that needs to be upheld. I'm in awe from the level of talent that I've seen here at times and feel honored just to be in the same 'room' as some of these artists.

I think that I better quit here before my ramblings wind up as fuel for someone's fire. Besides, I've got work to do. I mean no offense to ANYONE.

NO offense KJ, I was so dumb, when I started, that there was NO job that scared me, so I suffered through it. If there is one thing that I have learned in 20+ years, is that the smart man finds his limits at the time & refuses jobs that he is not qualified for. In the end he will learn all, but at this time in his repare life, it is best to say "NO THANK YOU" & both the customer & repairman, are best served...JER

That Aluminum Insert?

I got one in my shop somewhere. Came out of a Ray Schuler Shaft. I'll go look right after I get off my computer. It's aluminum. Wish me luck!!!

I never said I took the job.. the customer asked me about it.. I said I would find out if I could get an insert. If any job is too much of a pain.
I wont take it.. I have a full time job and I dont have the time for a big job anymore. I have 2 full size lathes... I have made cues in the past. I just dont have time for big jobs anymore. buying a shaft blank...putting a insert in is not a big job. I never said that I would make the shaft from scratch. Just because someone doesnt know the thread type on a specific insert, that means that he is unexperienced???? Granted...I'm no elite cuemaker. but there is not much I couldnt do. I just dont because I dont have time. I never thought I would take a hit just for asking a question.
thanks to all for the info on the insert.

I don't think that anyone's intentionally taking shots at you. A lot of what you've read is nothing more than 'back seat banter'. I have to believe however, that had you told your client up front & in the first place, what you've just told us, that we wouldn't be having this conversation. At some point in time you were under the impression that you could find time, otherwise you wouldn't have asked about an insert. So far you've found at least 2 original Schuler inserts in a short period of time. Given their rarity, I'd say you were doing pretty well. Take a shot at it & make your client happy. It might be fun to get your feet wet again. Ain't nobody that 'elite' that we can't help one another. KJ
