Re: "Presenting a Solution for Pool" http://www.insidepoolmag.com/billia...senting-a-solution-for-pool-200802035882.html

Thank you to all of you who have supported me in this venture monetarily and other. As you know I addressed the BCA Board of Directors with the proposal in February. It was well received by the BCA board and as a result they formed an inner committee of 5 of their board members. The members of this committee are scheduled to meet and discuss the proposal next week. From there the views of the committee will be voted on by the entire BCA Board of Directors.

What I need from you now is your continued support. I have setup an email account so you can have a voice directly to the BCA. I will forward all emails from this account directly to the sub-committee so they can have your opinions.

To be honest, the most credible opinions and views will come from people inside the billiard industry such as room owners, pro-shop owners and any other billiard related company. If you are in the industry I urge you to send a comprehensive letter to this email stating why you think the BCA should or should not pursue a professional pool program here in the USA. In addition to your opinion please state whether if or if not this would garnish your support for the BCA as a member and or sponsor of said professional tour.

Please send all correspondences to: propoolusa@yahoo.com

Thank you for your continued support.

Respectfully,

Mj

PS... If you support this proposal please bump this thread to the top after reading it. Thanks, Mj

Here are 4 snippets from the proposal to entice others to get on board with this project.

Re: What The Funding Is Used For
The funding will be used to create a framework consisting of a total of 38, $25,000 added BCAUSPT events and eight televised events over a 5 year period. 6, $25K added events + 1 TV event in year 1. 8, $25K added events + 1 TV event in year 2. Years 3, 4 and 5 will have 8, $25K added events and 2 TV events each.

Fundamental Purposes Of This Proposed System

A: To provide a clear path for all players to earn professional status in North America and to advance to the WPA events through the BCA as the governing body of cue sports in North America.

B: To forward the goals of the BCA and the WPA with respect to promoting a standardized rule system.

C: To enhance the membership of the BCA by encouraging new and returning members.

D: To inspire everyone in the billiard community to support the BCA and its members.

E: To provide a focal point for the entire billiard industry to support and benefit from.

F: To create a solid framework for which the sport of billiards can build upon and meet the above stated goals for the next 5 years.

A: To provide a clear path for all players to earn professional status in North America and to advance to the WPA events through the BCA as the governing body of cue sports in North America.

This clear path will be as follows; All players regardless of their current status will be required to begin their eligibility path by participating in existing and newly created regional tour events. Once a player has qualified through a regional tour event that player will be eligible to participate in the BCA US Pro Tour events (BCAUSPT). Player rankings from their participation will then allow them to move forward and participate in the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships (or any given name at the time of the event). Additionally, players will then be determined based on their ranking from the BCAUSPT events to participate as the North American contingents in WPA events.

This clear and concise path will benefit all current players while at the same time encouraging new participants in our sport by providing them a means to a goal.

Re: Outside Industry Corporate Sponsorships

The structure of this system will be extremely vast. It will encompass almost every part on North America with hundreds of events ranging from local grass roots style events and promotions to national and international television exposure. The huge majority of market segments that this system will cover is exactly what will attract large outside industry corporate sponsors to our sport. We will no longer be trying to sell multi billion dollar companies one or two events at a time but instead be selling to them hundreds of events that cover every market segment that our industry has to offer. This in its self is one of the main reasons the BCA should take the initiative lead in this excellent opportunity to create the foundation for which our sport can build upon for many generations to come.

Mike I have read the realted thinks and commend you for your past and current efforts and dedication to this great game.
While it is only a twist of words I wonder if the concept you are promoting might be better received and marketed as a national tour, US Tour or Open Tour or something similar rather than a pro-tour. Would be open to all qualifiers through the regional system and other selected criteria.

I may be wrong (as I often am) but I believe there are as many chess tournaments every weekend with as many participants as pool and the prize money available is larger and to the best of my knowledge they do not have a pro-tour to speak of.
I have often felt that Bob Jewett's writings on a national rating system similar to chess and table tennis would have a lot of merit and promote competition and increase entries in tournaments.
For what its worth and wishing you success

Well, I am not inside the billiard industry, which makes my opinion not worthy, I guess.

I will provide one suggestion as food for thought for the BCA.

I am curious about how the BCA sponsors American male professional pool players to overseas events.

It seems that some American players get a check for one amount, and another American player may receive a different amount, both attending the same overseas tournament. However, unfortunately for both of them, it is NEVER the full amount needed to cover expenses for that tournament.

Some European countries pay all costs for their professional players to attend high-profile events.

It sure would be swell if the BCA could be more transparent about this support that they do provide to professional players, rather than leaving some American pros questioning whether or not they will receive financial backing from year to year, at least as it pertains to the WPC. All players should be treated equal, IMHO.

No. I apologize if you did not comprehend the words I wrote in the manner I had intended them.

I am respectfully requesting that the BCA provide equal support to every single American male pro they send to an event, such as the World Pool Championship (WPC) in the Philippines, and it would be helpful if the BCA could let the American male pro know well in advance of the WPC (World Pool Championship) that they are intending to give them financial support, even though it does not cover the full cost of attending the World Pool Championship (WPC).

In essence, I am making reference to one tournament, the WPC (World Pool Championship).:)

no I was referring to the op

Oops. Sorry! :o

I think every single red-blooded American pool enthusiast is aware that a good tour is needed, especially for the American male pros.

One with a legitimate ranking system that is adhered to would be swell.

Most importantly, an organization that is transparent and does not show favoritism is imperative.

Looking at it on the surface, it doesn't look as if it should be that difficult to do, but as history has shown, nobody seems to have come up with a winning formula yet -- except the ladies, of course! :D

Jam, of course you opinion is worthy. Your knowledge of cuesports along with your writing talent would make for a very good letter to submit. Please respond to propoolusa@yahoo.com with your opinion.

Thanks,

Mj

YES...

Its what the BCA was originally, in part, set up to do.

A Brief History of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA)

The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) was established in 1948, with early involvement by players like Willie Mosconi and Willie Hoppe. The objective was to organize the players and promote the sport through qualifying tournaments at the local, regional and national levels in Straight Pool and 3-Cushion billiards (the popular competitive disciplines of the era) and recognize those champions. Organizers were also determined to produce an official rulebook to standardize the sport and help fund the effort; and to involve billiard rooms, retailers and manufacturers in meeting these promotional goals.

I think this is a very interesting point. It's not as though a working pro tour has never been accomplished. It just hasn't been accomplished for the men. Seems to me like there is a very proud and successful model already in place to follow. In that case, why is this so difficult?

Just food for thought...
