Re: Places to play/tourneys near Newark Delaware

Hi Rich, I was looking for something a little lighter, weekly tourneys etc. I'm a low C player on a good day. I'll be out that way for a few weeks and want to get some table time in.

Thanks

First State Billiards in Dover does a weekly Wednesday night 9 ball tourney @7:30. I haven't played in it yet, but I think it's Texas Express rules race to 3 or 5 double elimination. I've looked at the win sheets posted and there isn't a player who dominates it. Stacey Sudler plays there and has won it a few times. He's a pretty strong player, making it into the top 16 at the Md state 9 ball tourney.

I think I'm going to give it a try this week. I think it's $15 to get in.

If you're a Moose, the lodge in Smyrna has a weekly Friday night 8ball tourney $6. Double elimination race to 1 APA rules (ball in hand for CB fouls, call the 8 all other slop counts) It's hard to win because you only get one rack and anything can and does happen. I am a C player at best and I have taken 2nd twice. On Saturday night it's $5 9 ball. Texas express (except no push) race to 2 double elimination. 8 ball starts at about 7pm (full field is 32 for both) 9 ball starts at 8pm.

Hope this helps

If you are looking to just play, Pockets tavern on rte 13 has 7 valley barboxes that roll straight and have decent felt. During the day pool is free before 2pm. They usually have a lunch special and cheap draft beer too. Wednesday night pool is free at the Sandbar in Middletown, 4 valley barboxes. Darlenes on rte 300 just across the Md line in Sudlerville also has free pool Wednesday night, 2 valley barboxes. Mango's in Newark has several valleys and you can get cheap action there from what I hear, but I haven't been in there yet.
If you're looking to shoot 9' tables, you have to go to First State Billiards in Dover. They have several Gold Crowns and 4 really tight Gabriel's. I think there's like 24 tables including 6 barboxes and a snooker table.
They rent em by the hour, it's half price from 2pm -5pm, and on Monday through Thursday they have "Happy Time" from 5-8 pm for $6/person. Sunday "Happy Time" is 2-6 pm for $10/person Wednesday night is ladies night and I think table time starts at like $4.50/hr. There isn't a bar, but they have a good kitchen which has a tasty chinese food menu along with other assorted fryer type food. If you want to drink, brink a flask or 1/2 pt and buy a drink out of the machine. Be discrete and you won't have a problem.

It's been awhile since I've played in DE, but there used to be (hopefully still are) two rooms right in Newark - Cue and Cushion, run by Gene Isaacs, a really nice guy. And Don's, right on the main street. Best to call first, just to make sure.

Adios,
