Why is it that some players prefer their tip to be the bare minimum while others have a "birthday cake" on their cue as John schmidt used to say. For example some of the filipinos, and svb use the bare minimum on their tip. I used to think the more of the tip the better the action you get. Does it matter? or just a matter of preference?
 
Hi Al,

most of the time it s just about (subjective) personal preferences. The player trims his top the way where he thinks he will have the greatest success.
About the thickness: if you played a tip a bit longer (3-4weeks i would say), it will not longer mushroom again and it s playability will be constantly from then.
The sound is a bit different,if the tip is a bit *thinner*- many have then the feeling, that it hits *harder*. But the tip and the action will forsure be the same. All those references about supersoft, soft, medium and hard are subjective-- On one of my McDaniel shafts i have a Medium Moori installed-prepressed, because i want that it plays and feels the same from the first day to it s last day. 4 days ago a guy tested my cue and this shaft and watched at me like seeing E.T. - He couldn t believethat this was a Moori (newly installed,and thick), because it hits that hard. He rated it more like Kamui BlackHard or Talisman hard.
On my second shaft was a superthin Kamui Black Soft (also pre-pressed and halfa year old). It hits that hard likethe *usualy* much softer Moori.

ONce the tip is played long enough that it won t mushroom anymore, there is usualy no difference if it s about the thickness and it s ability to create action with it.

I agree it's a subjective, feel, thing. I hate thick tips - its nothing about mushrooming (which I have never paid any attention to): it's just that the sensation i get when playing with a tall tip feels like trying to do something delicate with your hands while wearing gloves.

When I put a new tip on, I always slice the top few layers off (I use laminated tips) before I do anything else.

But it's like the question of whether to use hard or soft tips - it seems to be purely a matter of preference.

I also put down about 2-3 layers- so it has always the same thickness as the *old* ones. Just an old habit:-)
 
same here i cut down about 60% Of the tip before i start to work on its shape i do that all the time with moori tips or wizzards. I really dont like longer tips on my break tips i go even lower on them.
