re-tipping lathe?

I'd like to check into a retipping lathe for personal use since my favorite room is opening back up soon. OR if anyone here knows what I could do to get professional results without spending a fortune, it would be appreciated. I'm kinda at wits end here, but since my cue isn't selling, I'll just keep it and start my own cue maintenance, for reasons I won't disclose. Anyone know what I can do here? Let me know by PM please, Jeff

well...

Well Joey, my cue isn't selling and I'm tired of bumping the thread up, so I've decided to just keep it. I have no equipment as of yet, and my mothers' boyfriends' pool hall is reopening soon so I'll have somewhere to use it. I've wanted to learn how to do this for quite some time now, but have gotten no help cuz I don't have my own machinery yet. The problem with this tool is everything seems to be "optional" I want something where everything you need to do the job correctly is included. Thanks anyways, Jeff

You're quitting pool and buying more equipment?
Find an old Atlas or South Bend metal lathe.
Or buy a Hightower.
It won't be cheap.

quitting

Well, while I'd LOVE to just quit and go about a "normal" lifestyle like most do, as long as I own these cues, they're gonna "jump at me" from time to time screaming to USE ME!!! lol And that's not the correct way to quit something, the correct way is to sell off or get rid of anything related to whatever you quit and just be satisfied with that. I don't see anyone even interested in that cue anymore, so I'm sure it won't sell, so I might as well learn to at least maintain them properly myself. It is what it is, I have to accept this. Thanks for the response anyways Joey, Jeff

I think you need to quit thinking you're gonna quit pool till you're 75 years old.
Let that pool hall open and see if there's even business there.
Your cue is not selling b/c people aren't too crazy about your bad vibes imo.
It's a great cue ( I don't like the ss collar though ).

Duke?????

If you have your heart set on a Dennis Swift case I can put you right in one. Also I just yesterday bought a converted wood lathe that is set up with chuck to clean shafts an george up tips. This lathe was owned by Murphy Little the collector who is now passed. I will sale lathe but must be picked up at house. I live in Kentucky.

I think it's more solid s/s than a collar Joe...The wood to wood contact on this one is very minimal. I'm not worried about what others think of me, but I AM a great seller and a pretty good buyer, though impatient especially when I keep getting the "run around" from a seller. That was the reason for my last purchase going wrong. Yeah, you're probably correct about my thinking of quitting pool, maybe I just need to "suck it up" and get back out there and just play ( and stay OFFLINE!) lol And it IS a great cue, if I had this knowledge I seek now and a stable place to play, I wouldn't have even offered it for sale cuz I like it and think it plays well for me.

harbor freight sells a small mini lathe like 5x8 for $300. You have to make a steady rest but for 400$ you will have a lathe. That ain't bad.

I'm a little confused , you'd quit all together if you sold your cue but you may start to play again if a pool hall opens near you . . . I don't understand why you need a tip lathe ? It sounds like as often as you play a tip should last you years.

Why spend any money on it at all ?

My explanation is simple. IF my cue were to sell, YES, I'd quit playing and be done with it. It seems everyone only wants to compliment my cue and nobody wants to buy it, so as long as I own it, I won't quit. I actually went out last night to use it for about 2 1/2 hours since I still own it, and had a little fun. My reason for asking about a tip "lathe" is that since it won't sell, I need my tips done somehow when they need changed...and nothing says you have to play to know how to and do tips. There are soo many guys that do that. I'm not wanting this turned into another argument thread, I asked to maybe buy something. Obviously you can't help me, so you wanna bait me into an argument. Well, I ain't biting. Have a good day

Wow , defensive much ?

I'm trying to find at your motivation so I can give an informed answer.

If you going to do like a tip a year then there are many ways to do it by hand and get 'pro' results.

If you are doing a couple a week or more then your need for equiptment changes drastically.

If you don't have an answer for either then I won't waste my time tring to give you detailed answers to both.

The lord helps those who help themselves . . . good luck with that. :)

Defensive? When I get crap about why I wanna do something, YES. I've always done it "by hand" but I want better results. Materials have changed so much over the past few years it's hard to keep up. I'm not even sure I CAN still do it to be honest, it's been so long. I personally don't NEED more than maybe 1 tip every 9 months or so cuz I have so many shafts to use, but I don't play much right now either. If my cue don't sell, which I think it won't, I'll start playing regularly when I graduate school in 2010 and get back on a "normal" schedule. I'm sure getting a lathe is a little extreme right now, but I NEVER 1/2 ass anything...it's a trait I have, nothing I can do about it

You have the wrong motivation to keep on playing pool or quitting.
You wanting a lathe is another impulse.
You'll put it up for sale weeks later. WE KNOW that's gonna happen.

Take your cue and just play pool and quit the drama really.

I accidently deleted your PM reply somehow)I thought you were serious, only reason I pitched it your way!!have a good one

I would suggest that you buy a lathe that will allow you to make and do something more than just tips.
Looka at getting a lathe big enough that can help you make something for around the home or cue repairs or a model engineering hobby.I would look at a lathe that can cut threads.
I don't think it is wise to buy just a tipping lathe, if there is no buisness in your area , unless you just want it for your couple of cues.
Hope this helps. Neil

Good advise. Duke, you may also want to consider the Unique Companion.
I have the companion 1 and am very happy with it.
