rear chuck ????

So I got my rear chuck arbor made and I was just wondering what you folks consider an acceptable measure of run out for the rear chuck is?? I mean mine runs at .002 run out and if I fiddle with it I can get a little better.. Am I being too picky or is .002 good enough??

I don't know what a rear chuck arbor is?
 
If you consistantly have 0.002" run out you can get it perfect with a sliver of gas pump receipt paper on the low side. You also have to consider that the chuck is only off by 0.001" That is pretty f'n close for a chuck on the back of the lathe. With 0.002" on the back chuck which would be about "this is a guess" 15 inches back on the shaft you will have close to double that at the end. Put 2 pieces together with 0.004" at the ends and you will have 0.016 in the middle. Just a thought. 0.016" is about the thickness of 5 sheets of 20# copy paper. The cue will flex that much. Just depends on how picky you are. 0.016 is a lot in the middle. Just IMHO of course.

Made one of those. Took to long to get it right all the time. chuck is quick and dirty.

At the rear?
I like the cue to be zero in the middle. Can't indicate the middle of the butt from the buttcap.

If the butt were straight and it zeroed out on both ends....theoretically it should be zero in the middle.

My indicator jumps on the grain anyway. Can never tell exactly where it is.

Likewise it could be zero in the middle and out on both ends.

Well, I'm sol b/c I have a Logan lathe.
Gotta use the steady rest and lathe dog.
Indicate middle and move the collet in the chuck until middle zero.
Indicate collar if needed.
Last pin I installed had 2 tenths runout at the pilot.

Now, if I can get Feeler lathe ...

I have it somewhere but cannot find it. :rolleyes:
Turret and live threader for the UNI-LOC quick release pin.
Blew me away. Center drill, another drill then another one .
Boom, live threader going in. Baam, quick-release pin.
Same machine was used to pin Preds I believe.

Two things I have done and too help with this. Switched the end of my indicator to a flat head instead of the rounded one. And I will just touch the wood while it lathe is spinning with some 800 grit for about just .6 of a second to knock any fuzzy off before putting it to the dial.


<~~~with wood sometimes you have no choice but to just take an average.....

Yes, I saw the video, way cool operation.

About 5 years ago I was perhaps 20 minutes late on a locally advertised Hardinge 2nd op turret lathe :mad: ... the guy wanted $350 :eek: At that time $350 Canadian would have been about $250 US :eek: :eek: I'm not sure I'll ever get over that near miss.
