What is your thought on the large group of recent action matches (mostly Roy's) if the players had been on their own dime 100%

Does Donny beat Siming?
Does Tkach beat the people she is playing?
and so on.

It's nice to have those matches to watch, but we all know that playing on your own cheese has an incredible direct effect on match.

The one thing I am not talking about is someone saying they are playing on their own cash and the backer gives the cash to them. Of course no way to tell, but there is a difference.
 
I personally think the only reason people seem
to play better on their own cheese,as you put it
is because they play easier games when they bet their own money

and it is much easier to free roll with the nuts

plus other less altruistic motives and hazards to the stakehorse

of course not once in my life have I been staked
 
I think that sometimes (sometimes) you can play better because you want to please someone else and show others your level is what they think it is.

Other times ya, like you described a free roll.
 
Siming didn't play particularly well against Donny.

There, I said it.

And no amount of "playing on your own" versus "getting staked" would make up for the difference in fundamentals between Siming and Donny. Donny actually chickenwinged numerous times in that last set, and it made him both miss balls and lose the proper cue ball speed.

A player with equal patterns/safeties and better fundamentals is basically always freerolling against the person with poorer fundamentals. Staking doesn't play much of a part. The person with lesser fundamentals will get their heart broke a number of times thinking they left their opponent safe-ish (because it would be a very low percentage shot for themselves), only to see their opponent run out on them. The lesser player starts to get tight, thinking they have to hit their safes perfect to have a chance, and this leads to even more sellouts.
