recommend some good pool books...

the one that has helped me the most is Ray Martins 99 critical shots in pool..

what I did was start with shot one and run 15 balls with that shot then move to shot two ect...

the first 10 to 15 will go pretty quickly if you have any skill at all but after that it gets interesting. but run 15 with all of them even the easy ones.

I believe that if you master all the shots in that book. you will be one hell of a player.

ok thanks, looks like i can get it for less than 5$ shipped on amazon.

any thoughts about the book in the original post?

Pleasures of small motions is the nuts! vvvvvvvery good book.

There are a lot of great pool books out there, and I've read most of them. Right now I'm rereading "Essential Pool: A Complete Course From A World Champion" by Arthur "Babe" Cranfield and Laurence S. Moy. It offers a unique perspective to some of the basic facets of the game, like the grip and the stroke. For some reason, this book resonates with me.

It really depends on what you want to learn. For the mental side of any sport read The Inner game of Tennis by Gallway. I have never read Capelle's book on the mental side, but I have heard it is good. Capelle also does a good job with his other books. Banking with the Beard is a good book for banks. Byrne's books are excellent. Read them all.

Pleasures of Small Motions:

It is a good book for me. It is a good read &you'll tend to read it more than once. I was in a 3 week slump. I bought this book and got back in the game within the first 3 chapters.

I still recommend Jim Rydell's The Owner's Manual for the Complete Pool Player. His website is pjbilliards.com I consider it the most useful book I've ever read.

my favorites were...

The Science of Pocket Billiards - by Jack Koehler
Play Your Best Pool - by Capelle
I Came to Win - the Monk

The two I keep coming back to, already mentioned... but good enough to get another nod. Banking with the Beard, and Martin's 99 critical shots in pool.

I liked "Running the Table" by Kid Declious.
"Hustler days" by Dyer
Instruction I like any of Phil Cappelle books.
"The Eight Ball Bible" I forgot by who is also very good,

I think that a much better book for the "mental game" would be either "The Inner Game of Tennis" or "The Tao of Sports". JMHO, many here disagree with me.

Introductory material
Robert Byrne, Standard Book of Pool and Billiards
Ray Martin, 99 Critical Shots (the diagrams and verbiage are dated though)

Intermediate+ material
Phil Capelle, Play Your Best Straight Pool
George Fels, Advanced Pool

Specialized Stuff
The Inner Game of Tennis
Pleasures of Small Motions
Winning One Pocket ($)
Shot, Moves, and Strategies ($)

Inner Game of Tennis always gets my vote. Pleasures of Small Motions, be warned! Very cerebral, I really didn't care for it much, but I've only read it once, so far. 99 Critical Shots by Ray Martin and Mastering Pool {George Fels}.

I have read many of them and I find Phil Capelle's book, Play your Best Pool, to be extremely helpful in alot of areas.
