Recommended Cue Tip Tools

I just got my first cue, a new McDermott, and it is on its way. What tool/tools are the best for shaping, scuffing, and maintaining a cue? I saw one that looked alright, the Cuetec Bowtie. Is it any good or are there others that would be better?

I like this one... but it's better to pretty much leave the tip alone unless you miscue. Then it might need to be hit with this once or twice. http://trogdoncues.com/tip_shaper.htm

You just stand the cue on the bottom, hold this to the tip and keep it perpendicular to the shaft. Turn the cue as you sand lightly. You'll get the hang of it.

I recommend the Ultimate tip tool & a TipPik. The pik will open the surface w/o loss of material, and the tip tool has dime/nickel radius roughing capability. Just be sure to act carefully & sparingly.

hah the McD likely will come with a nickel curved tip on it ... mine did at least...

i have the Willard shaper things .. in nickel and dime (got a good price on em) and one of those tipik's but so far haven't had to use any of them ...

Get an Ultimate Tip Tool if you can find one. Then get either a Taper or a 12" file to use as a tapper, you can get more on the hit with it. If you plan on using a layered tip DO NOT USE A TIP PICK. These seem to cause a lot of delamination of the tips that I replace. If you are going to stick with the pressed i.e. Le Pro, Triangle type tips then pick away. I have also always liked to have a Qwiz around for the shaft, but that's me.

q-wiz (washable sandpaper with different grit sides)
willard dime shaper

that's it for me. very light dime shaping acts as a tip scuffer / tip pik.

The two that I use are:
Williard Tip Tool
TipPik
I've used or tried just about all of them and these two work very well.

Thanks for the replies. It seems that everyone is recomending the Tip Pik. Wouldn't the Cuetec Bowtie do the same thing as the Tip Pik but have a few additional features as well?

Hey Bud, I have been doing cue repair for a long time and the one thing i can tell you is a tip pik is murder to your tip. Everytime you use it you have to get acclimated to the tip again just like when it was new, it takes the consistency out of the tip once it is played in. Once your tip, that is saying if you are using a good tip, is played in and you have taken the time to keep it properly groomed you really should never have to reshape the tip. Use a Tip Tapper instead of the Tip Pik and your tip will last a lot longer and hold chalk better. But this might just be my opinion but I know where I learned to form my opinions, from past mistakes.

Tip tools...

When I see someone using an Ultimate Tip Tool, I cringe.

A customer I had put a brand new Moori tip on for was telling me it was losing chunks out of the edges of the tip. Put another one on for him, came back saying this one is doing it too.

Finally saw him using the Ultimate on his cue and saw how the tips were getting taken apart by it. Was just about to try and talk to the people I got the Moori's from. Glad I wasn't too quick to call them.

Not bad tips, just bad tip care by the cue's owner.

i have one, but haven't had to use it ... one thing i have noticed so far ... a decent quality tip and you should never have to use something on it to get the chalk to grip on it ... i picked mine up when i was dealing with those 'funky' tips that come on Cuetec's ... now that i am playing with a McDermott i haven't had to touch the tip yet other then the initial shaping because it had a flat spot on one of them ... still holds chalk great

REALLY? I have never seen this. Could you maybe send me a pm and explain in greater detail, been using mine for years and never had a problem now the moori's that is a whole other can o worms...

Willard (quarter)
Q Wiz
Tip *****ster (like in http://beadsandbilliards.com/tiptools.html)

I am not recommend to use a tip pik. At least I heard two problem from people who use tip pik; first one say when he change the tip, he find a lot of the chalk between the tip and the ferrule because the tip pik make a hole in the tip and the dust from chalk can get in. Second, tip pik can cause you to scratch the ferrule if you are not very carefull (and both of the problem will not happen if you use tip *****ster)
