Recovering rails???

What is the best staple gun for recovering pool table rails?
Grady,
I have both the duo-fast 5020 gun and a $25 gun from Harbor Freight. Both work great but the duo-fast is my favorite. They shoot 1/2"crown staples. The leg length I recommend is 1/4".

Grady...I purchased an Arrow electric for about $50 at Lowes that shoots 3/8 or 5/16 staples....has worked great for me....

I picked up a surebonder 9615 fine wire stapler from amazon. I think it is good if your just planning on doing your own or maybe small quantities. If I was doing it everyday I would probably get a nicer one. Either way I would suggest getting something made for upholstry using 22 gauge staples so the rails don't get beat up too bad from recoverings.

An electric one! :duck:

You shouldn't have to pay more than $150 for a real nice one(including a Duo-Fast 5020). Make sure you don't buy a cheap one. You will regret it and be pulling more staples!

I bought one from Lowes for $80 and it works great(don't remember brand off hand) but a friend of mine has a carpet stapler that gives my stapler the 5-out! All staplers are not created equal.....

antique table tack boards...

My very old Arrow, don't know which model but it was killer, stopped working while recovering an antique Brunswick Arcade that I was setting up. Went to Home Depot and bought three different electric ones in succession going from cheapest to most expensive "professional" and they ALL failed to penetrate the wood deep enough. I would get very specific advice from a professional table mechanic before wasting money by trying to save, and don't listen to anyone who has just recovered their home table, perhaps stapling into soft cheap wood. Nothing wrong w them trying to help, but these days you'll eat up some expensive gas by trying to buy a cheap stapler. You could buy used then sell it for about what you paid after use.

I did some checking a few years ago on different types of staplers that I could buy and use to recover my table. It's been a while since I bought mine and i'm sure there are a lot of models on the market now that weren't available then, but I bought a Senco SJS Power Plus Air Stapler. This is the same stapler that a couple of the billiard places used here in Charleston, SC and it works great. I've used it for a couple of other jobs besides doing my pool table and i've been very pleased with it.

Stapler

I've used the Duo Fast 5018 for many years and I like it fine. It's electric and you can buy it new for around $200 on ebay now. You can also find used ones on there, but make sure you buy the 5000 series, not the 5400 series. They look the same in the picture, but the 5400s are narrow staples and not good for tables. I also use an air stapler, which I actually prefer because you can adjust the power. It's just easier to not lug the compressor around to people's homes. If you're only doing tables in your pool room, it would be cheaper to go that way- especially if you already have a compressor. You can buy one at Harbor Freight that will work fine.
