out of all the things mentioned i LOVE the call your next pocket game for nine ball. its great for improvement and does favor the better player, i think. thanks for reminding me of that game
one interesting thing I've seen to make offensive play more encouraged is the sudden death 7 ball format in which you only get one safety. if you have used it and miss a ball, your opponent gets ball in hand
