Reducing my Schon Shaft??

I bought a Z2 shaft for my Schon cue, but as I have played with it the taper is just too strong for my preference. I have a Meucci shaft that is 12 mm and like that taper, but I like the feel of the Schon cue. I am thinking about taking the original Schon shaft and shaving it down to 12 mm and changing the taper to the same as the Meucci. Any opinions?

how old is you schon? I hate messing up original shafts, personally id pick up a used schon shaft and have someone alter it instead.

Its not too old I just got it in February. I am thinking about going back to shooting with a Meucci, just seems like its hard to move the cue ball the same with that Z shaft. I have a Kamui Medium tip on it and that shaft is really unforgiving.

Send me that Fat non cue ball moving Schon shaft. Ill teach it how to move the cue ball for you and then send it back. lol

I did something similar to my Schon years ago...had a guy turn both shafts down from around 13mm to 12.5 mm, with the pro taper pulled back another 2 inches. I loved it. They're still straight as an arrow and the action really juiced up on them. Just make sure whoever does it knows what he's doing. Might take a couple of weeks to rest between turns, although if the shafts are older, they're probably stable enough to do a little quicker.

I had mine turned down to a 12.5mm but kept the taper profile. I am thinking about taking it down to a 12 and making it a longer taper.

Just a thought

Sheldon Lebow made me 2 thinner custom shafts and tapers.(Efrens long taper and another copying my Mottey tapers. from underwaterwood! I have used a Szamboti shaft on my schon- thin and Ivory ferruled with the Origonal Tip. Rundy could make you a new shaft too, mark

Since playing with it tonight, I think I might just take the Z shaft and have the taper modified a small bit. Just make it slide smoother in my hand. Keep it at 11.75mm, but just narrow it down a little further up the cue.

I know that Schon shafts have a big chunk of plastic and glue at the end of their non-ivory ferrules.
I cut the last 1/4 inch off to make it a an uncapped ferrule.

In my opinion feels better and the deflection is much better as well.

Nothing compared to a 314 or OB shaft but... It is much more manageable.

If you like the feel I would say it is worth the try.

I keep searching for a ld shaft that has the same feel but have yet to find one.

The other thing abut just taking off the final 1/4 inch of the ferrule, you can always go back and add the 1/4 you cut off.
Can't do that if you have it turned down.

Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

Very good point! Probably explains the higher deflection Schon shafts tend to have...

I have just went back to shooting with my Meucci hook, I found out that no cue moves the ball around a9 foot table in my hands like that cue. My Schon/predator shaft is great on those small 7ft tables, but that Whippy Meucci is the best feeling on the 9 footer to me. I have not took it to do anything yet, because I don't know what I want to do lol. So until then, Meucci it is!

You know I was thinking about this the other night.
The only other two shafts I would maybe recommend is the jacoby edge or the G core shaft by McDermott.

I have used the edge but need a 30 inch shaft.

I have hit with the g core but never on a Schon.
I would be curiuos on how that felt.

Just got my new 31 inch Schon butt and playing around with more shafts.
For me I got to go back to my custom mike glyussay shaft.

Yeah that schon shaft is a good shaft, but it has a huge amount of deflection, but that Z shaft hits awesome just limited action compared to that Meucci. I like moving the ball when I need to, and that Z shaft just wont move it the way I like. I have a Kamui Medium on it but thinking about changing the tip and making that taper smoother....

You can change the tip all day long and it will not change how you bore the cb around the table. If you change the z shaft taper it is just going to get worse. If it even can be altered to a pro taper you are going to have a shaft so whippet that a wet noodle will seem stiff

I don't think so, It cant be any worse than a 12 mm Meucci, that shaft bounces like crazy and puts a ton of spin on the cue ball. I mean the tip on there before I got it seemed to play quicker than the kamui I have on it now.

or buy a different shaft thats already 12mm or buy a different shaft to shave down. no sense messing up a perfectly good shaft

But if Its what I shoot with and I don't like it, Is it a "perfectly" good shaft? Root word there is "perfect". people use that word way to much when describing something. Maybe to you it is a Perfectly good shaft, but for my preference, its a bit stiff and shoots way shorter than a pro tapered shaft. The way to change that is alter it to what I like.

Hey chop that shaft up and use it for friewood for all I care.

You asked and you got answers and opinions.
Sure for you the shaft is not perfect. for the other 90% of pool playes it is just fine.

The points we are trying to make to you is that you would probably be better off getting a different shaft before you start cutting this one up.

I can tell you what I liked from a feel and deflection perspective has changed over the past 3 years. Regardless of of where you are today, we all evolve and change. Some for the better and some for the worse :)
