"one of the shafts had a roll to it that was a reface issue that has been corrected By refacing the shaft."

"You should be able to have any good cue maker do it for you."

The above quotes were taken from a thread in the "Wanted/For Sale" forum. Is anybody familiar with this procedure? Does it remove a "roll" in a shaft? What is involved? What do you think? Thanks!

The first thing you should ask the seller is if the shaft and butt roll true when they are apart. If this is the case, any competent cue builder or repair person should be able to take a fine cut off the face of the shaft or butt and get the cue rolling well when they are together. What happens is the face of the shaft or butt has been worn or has a nick or bump on it. Facing it will true it up and usually resolve the problem.

a refacing problem is found based on a joint issue. First, they should roll straight apart. When joined, the surfaces of the shaft and the butt joint don't mate properly thus a refacing would be needed. But still have to check if the joint pin is straight.... if the pin ain't, no amount of refacing would solve the problem.

Hi rayjay
This is a standard procedure in my shop, anytime I spin a shaft, even if it's just a cleaning, if it doesn't spin true I re-face the joint, Usually it is caused by dirt or age.
