Refinish Disaster

Has anyone ever had a cue refinish just go completely wrong? I am working on a high end carom cue. The ring work detached from the joint. I was going to drill and bore out the threads, create a phenolic tenon and reattach the ring work. The tap the joint. Well...The drill bit grabbed the piece and spun it before I could hit the power switch. The collet rubbed through the, what I suspect is a very thin, finish. There was some writing that is now half worn through.

Any suggestions other than throwing myself at the mercy of the customer?

Tell the Customer!
Even if you repair it,
Tell the Customer!

Thanks, Micheal. I agree 100% that I need to inform the customer and I should have explicitly started that in my original post. Does anyone have any repair suggestions?
Get rid of the signature if you can't save it, and refinish it.
Hopefully, you took a picture of the signature before you started the project.
