It can be done but it's a real PITA.
The refinish can be done so much better and easier if you don't handcuff yourself with this stipulation.
After 40 yrs you'd think that the wrap is about due for a change anyway don't you think?
About 6 mos ago, I did a refinish on a cue for a Seybert's client with the same condition; don't touch the wrap. I taped it off.
Shortly after the client received the cue, he decided the cue now looked so good that the old leather wrap looked out of place and wanted it changed.
Oh well, another day, another dollar. Job security.
