remove scratches in cue finish

Is their any way to remove light scratches in the finish of a cue?

I've used a polish compound, but it does not have enough of grit

to take out the scratch.

Do you have to have the cue refinished?:confused:

Obviously it depends on a lot of things. You can't know how thick the finish on the Q is, so any sanding could go right through the thin finish. Light sanding with fine sandpaper is probably the 1st step. This will cause a FLAT SPOT, even if you don't go all of the way throgh. This will be followed by several degrees of rubbing compounds & polishes. If you have a Q with a stain of any kind under the finish & you sand throgh, you'll have a white spot, that may not be repairable, without a $150 refinish. It's a tool & tools get dirty & they get scratched, get over it, OR take it to a Qmaker wait several weeks or months to have it refinished & pay the man. ..JER

I have a Unique Products Cue Companion lathe.
I've been doing basic repairs for over 5yrs.
(tips,ferrules,wraps,condition shafts,basic sneaky pete cues)

How fine of sand paper do you start with.
I have micro-mesh 1500,1800,2400,3200,3600,4000,6000,8000,
& 12000.

Also, What type of rubbing compounds & polishes?

The scratches are only on the surface, not deep.

OK.....Try WET sanding with 1000 grit SAND PAPER,with the lathe turning. If that doesn't remove them, then you'll have to go to 600. If that doesn't get them, you'll probably looking at a refinish. Anyway after the 600, use 1000, then 1500( all WET). Now use "Meguiars #1" on a soft cotton cloth (an old T shirt works great). LET THE COMPOUND DO THE WORK, DON'T SQUEEZE TOO HARD. Then I use Meguiars #5 & finally # 9. After each sanding & compound use, with the lathe turning, follow each with a "WITH THE GRAIN MOTION" & the lathe stopped. Hope this helps...JER

Thanks for the info.
I have some low end cues to practice on.
When I start to try to remove any scratches from anyone's cue,
I'll let them know in advance that they may have send the cue
back to the cuemaker/company for a complete refinish.

I do not have the equipment to do the cue finish.
I think the cue finish process is the most difficult part
of cue building.

I forgot to mention to mask off the wrap area. Because the water from wet sanding will get under the tape, you'll have to repress the last couple of wraps of the string...JER
