Removing shaft collar

Is it possible to remove an original shaft collar and have it fitted to a new shaft?

Do you want to save the original shaft or junk it?

I have removed them before with patience and miniature boring tools. Takes forever and only worthwhile if you're trying to save a premium shaft and ring separately.

If you're junking the shaft, nothing is easier than parting the ring off and boring it out to slip onto a different shaft.

Junking it. Previous owner had it turned down way thinner than I like a shaft so I just wanted to have the collar fit to a new shaft blank
 
I do this all the time............... cut off 6 inches of the old shaft at the joint................. center it up in the lathe and put a center in the cut off end......... turn the end to .600....carefully cut right up to the collar or rings and make it clean.... now take a new shaft blank and bore a hole in the joint end about 1 1/2 inches deep........ bore it so the turned end of the old shaft is a nice fit........... cut the tenon length on the old shaft joint to fit the hole in the new shaft..... put some glue grooves on the tenon and file a slight glue relief flat on it ...................... glue it up with epoxy............... face the joint and turn the new shaft............


if you do it right ..... you can never tell.......... it feels and plays great

If the old shaft is junk I prefer cutting the ring out and re-boring to fit the new shaft, it simplifies.

It is a very simple process, chuck up the shaft, true it up, remove insert(if there is one) Reface the joint, then bore out to the desired size, then part the ring pack off. This keeps everything as square as possible. Then install on new shaft.
