Reno Open- Danny Kuykendall

It's cheap to get into and if you are already in the hotel for the amateur tournaments, an entry of $125 seems not so bad. The room rate is $21/night and $34/night on the weekend. The hotel adds $26,500 and it guarantees $15,000 to first place. 100% of entry fees go to the prize fund.
That, plus after Thanksgiving and the first couple weeks of December is a very slow time for the casinos. And the Sands is not one of the top properties in Reno. There are also very few large tournaments on the Left Coast, and Reno is only a couple of hours from S.F.

So for two weeks during a slow time the Sands has 300-400 people (poolplayers and family), who think they know how to gamble, descend upon this medium sized hotel/casino, rent the rooms, fill up the restaurants, and fill up the slot machines. It's a good thing for the Sands. I used to go twice per year in the late '90s, and loved every minute of it.

WHOA! Am I reading this right? $60 to enter the Reno Open tournament if entry postmarked by Nov 13? What a bargain? I thought it was $100 or $150 That combined with the $21 per night hotel is the bargain of the year, just as long as you don't have a major casino gambling problem. :D

Snag one of those low, non-refundable Internet air fares, bring some MRE's for a few days and you have a pool player's dream come true. :D :D

sounds like we shoulda went lol

In 1988 it was $300 to get in which I did. The PBT said that the next year you would have to be a PBT member to play, so I haven't entered again. I assume the PBT requirement disappeared when it did.

I was golfing, missed this, sorry to bump

I can tell you 15-20 years ago this tournament was on par with the U.S. Open as an elite event. Its mainly a regional tournament now, thats the point I was making. I know that I am not mistaken about those numbers, I used to attend this tournament twice a year for probobly 4-5 years straight.
According to AZ the Sands has only 12K added this year.

Man go to the usppa site and read all about it. The 12,000 is for the usppa pro-am,at the time is what az was reporting, they add another 26,500 for the pro open. I used to go twice a year for a lot more than that and I know I am getting old and senile but I never remembered over 300. Doesn't that mean u would have to use a brakcet of 512. I dont think that happened. I do remember 250 though.

That 60 is for the pro-am not the Open. $125 for open $150 late entry.
It has been the bargain of the last 2 decades. Where have u been? It used to be cheaper.

I did get over 300 players at least once, and yes it was a bracket of 512. That was back in the days before you needed to have so many sheets in to qualify for the Reno tournament. It was in Dec 1990, and Jay was the T.D. and Rich Geiler won the event. Does that ring a bell?

That is a different story

If you are talking sheets then that is the usppa pro-am not the pro open
That is possible but not quite sure. My son won the usppa in 1994 and there were a little over 200. He lost his first match then won 13 in a row to take it down. So that for sure was a 256 bracket.
P.S. If Gene Stary is there, ask him or lets see if he could add the history of all tournaments on the usppa site
If not ask Tony, don't think he went back that far as part of the show however.

Hey Joey-- Couldn't make it Saturday. I went over to visit with my old bud Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, who was playing at the Saenger in Mobile. Good show. Bunch of old farts like myself...;)

So, did you win it? Heard Nick vita, Scotty T., and Jamie Farrell were supposed to play. Lil Sal, Eddie "The Mystery Player" Eddie Brown: what a crowd!!

Talk with ya~

It was definately Gene running it back then. Who is your son? I remember someone winning that tournament after losing there first match but don't remember who it was. The reason I brought up the Pro-Am was to illustrate the point that this venue has held events of that size and should be capable of doing it again.
I never seen the pro's get more than a 128 field when they had a $300 entry fee.

Your right

Since they added tables and space it could be done.
It was Randy Cady who performed that feat. I have every match on tape except the first one he lost. I decided if I want to get a least one tape
I better pay for the next match or he might be knocked out. So he wins and I get superstitious and so I tape every match after that. Cost me like $250 but it was well worth it.

We missed you Doc. Duane and David Walters were no show also.

Add Bennie Conway Jr to the mix, along with several other players.

Scotty Townsend wins it: Another roadie comes to New Orleans and picks up the cash. He let JF DOG IT BIG TIME (sloppy seconds again) for the win. No wonder he is scared to play the road hogs when they come to town. :D

Lots of good competition. Lil Sal was no where to be seen. We had some players from New Iberia. A little action after the tournament.

Both of my matches that I lost were hill hill and both times I had played a good safety and my opponent kicked the object ball (which was always FAR away from any pocket). One opponent split the pocket with an unbelieveable kick. The other opponent was locked up big time, kicked hard accidentally hits the object ball rebounding from another rail, banks the object ball one rail and gets perfect shape on the next object ball for the run out on hill-hill.

I QUIT.

The reason why there aren't too many big names is that the tournament is 12K added with $100 entry fee, its really become more of a regional tournament instead of the national event it was 80's and early 90's.
The entry fee is $125 and the added money is $25,000. $15,000 for first place, hardly a regional tournament.
