Replacing a dead rail on a Gold Crown

I have a 9' Gold Crown at home that has half of a rail that is dead. I've gotten underneath the table and made sure none of the bolts were loose.

Can any of you table mechanics out there tell me what causes a rail to be dead? I hardly use it at all, and I definitely don't sit on it. I don't put anything on the table other than the balls.

What exactly would need to be done to get this dead rail fixed? Any place on the internet where I can order a rail? Anyone know a decent pool table mechanic in the Austin, TX area that they'd like to recommend?

I won't call the billiard place that initially set up my table because I wasn't satisfied with the way they put on the felt. The main billiard store in town is a place I *refuse* to do business with and I wouldn't trust their mechanics as far as I could throw them. So, I'm in a kind of tough spot.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

i have an old table, maybe from the 60's or 70's. one of the rails went dead on me, and i found it to be loose, like the glue failed. i removed the rail and re-fastened the rubber to the wood with some silicon caulk, (i figured this would keep it's flexibility),clamped it in place overnight, and re-installed the rail. it's back to normal.

Gold Crown III's cushions are famous for going dead after only a few years.
Go with Artemis or Olhausen's cushion.
I know one pool hall who had their GC's recushioned 2 years ago with Superspeed cushions. They're not so superspeed now.

As Larry said, there is some chance that the rubber is loose, and can be reglued.

If you don't trust the main store there, maybe you can find an independent mechanic. Ask the pool halls who they use.

Gold Crown IIIs of a certain age had major, major problems with the composition of the cushions. At the pool hall where I usually play, the GCIIIs have had about 20 cushion sections replaced. Cushions can reasonably be expected to last for 30 years, but they have to made right.

We have had to do alot of replacing the rubbers on the GC3's. Something about the rubber just went bad....some tables will have 1 or 2, and others might all be bad. Very odd, but very common on the GC3's.
If it is the rubber just come unglued you can mover it around, but if it has gone bad....... It either will be hard as a rock, or spongy with no rebound. Might as well just replace them all, rather than just the bad one. Mostly so you won't have to worry about it happening to another one.

replacing 1 isn't a good idea, replace all. if just 1 is replace then you will have 5 rails that will react alike and 1 that is really different. i have replace a lot of GCIII rubber. I hate that job...LOL. i would recommend getting some accu-fast for it.

Waku, does the AccuFast's profile fit GC II's too?
Do you have to raise the rubber a bit or the same?
Thanks.

they will fit, take the old rubber off, sand all the glue off the rail blank and glue the accu-fast on. use rubber cement to put them on, coat both the rail blank and rubber, let them sit for half hour or so then put them on. just make sure the top of the rubber is flush with the top of the rail blank.

That's great. I might just take my rails to Olh's factory here then.

can't get them from the factory, they don't "sell", you will need to go to the olhausen store on the 15 right on the north end od S.D. on the west side of the 15. they can sell them to you.
